SOUTHEAST ASIA'S royalty will grace the 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games beginning this weekend with host Philippines aiming to top the medal table.
Prince Norodom Ranariddh of Cambodia arrived at around 5 p.m. yesterday on board a chartered flight for a weeklong stay.
Scheduled to fly in today at 2:15 p.m. are Brunei's Crown Prince Haji-Al-Muhtadee Billah and his wife on board a chartered Airbus A340-200.
Brunei's Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, who serves as president of the Brunei National Olympic Council, will also arrive today at 2 p.m. on board Malaysian Airlines flight MH 704. The departure of the crown prince and the princess has yet to be announced. Prince Haji will stay until Dec. 6.
On Saturday at 5:20 p.m., Princess Sievannavari Nariratana of Thailand will arrive on a chartered flight. She will stay until Dec. 4.
Thai Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn will also arrive in a separate plane. The prince will participate in the SEA Games.
While the royalty of Brunei and the princess of Thailand will be coming for the SEA Games, they will also be on official visits, said Judith Dolot, Manila airport public affairs office chief.
The 10-day biennial showpiece officially opens Sunday in Manila, although events will be held in Bacolod, Cebu and in suburbs of the capital.
A total of 441 gold medals are up for grabs in 41 events, with the Philippine martial art arnis as well as ballroom dancing making their debuts.
Tight security
Security is tight with a 17,000-strong police force on alert to ensure the safety of the thousands of athletes and officials taking part.
The Games, coupled with the approaching Yuletide season, will boost foreign tourist arrivals and help the government meet its target of 2.6 million inbound travelers this year, Philippine Tourism Authority General Manager Robert Barbers said.
"We are expecting an upsurge in tourism receipts that would surpass last year's record and hopefully sustain this positive growth up to the first quarter of next year. The country's tourist stakeholders, the national and local governments are all prepared to take advantage of this situation," Barbers said.
Not only members of foreign delegations but also their family members, friends, fans and game enthusiasts from Southeast Asia and elsewhere would be arriving in the Philippines. They would book hotels, eat in restaurants, visit museums and recreation centers and go shopping and sightseeing.
Tourism receipts
Aside from the sports delegations, the traditional arrival of expatriates (balikbayans) and vacationing overseas Filipino workers would also spur tourism in the last month of the year.
Barbers called the SEA Games "a big challenge to the Filipino people, most especially to political leaders from all fronts, to put our best foot forward as the entire international community will observe us during this biennial sports extravaganza."
The PTA chief said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself had set the tone in recognizing the importance of beautifying tourist areas as she ordered the Metro Manila Development Authority to give the metropolis a facelift.
Hopes for 120 medals
Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano earlier projected receipts from the tourism industry to reach $2.5 billion this year.
Philippine Olympic Committee chair Robert Aventajado said the country was angling for gold medals in boxing, equestrian, taekwondo and other martial arts, as well as in athletics.
"We are targeting some 120 gold medals this year, and we are doing our best to land on top," Aventajado told Agence France-Presse.
But football will be the main attraction after basketball was pulled from the event at the last minute due to a long-standing squabble among local officials, and defending champions Thailand are hot favorites.
Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma (Myanmar), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam have sent football teams to Bacolod, where the game enjoys a huge local following.
"I believe Thailand is still the team to beat," Aventajado said, but added that the Philippines will give them a run for their money, while a strong Vietnam squad will also be up there.
The Philippine football team is considered the best the country has ever assembled, buoyed by six Filipino-foreigners including brothers Philip James and James Joseph Younghusband who live in Britain.
Football revival
The brothers are considered the great hope of reviving football in the Philippines, which is currently ranked a lowly 189th in the world next to tiny Bhutan.
Both have played in reserve team matches for English club Chelsea, and the Philippines is banking on this experience to give it an edge.
"We have a great team and I'm confident that everyone will deliver," 18-year-old striker Philip James told reporters in Bacolod.
Former Aston Villa and England striker Peter Withe, who used to manage Thailand and is now coaching Indonesia, also believes Thailand remains the team to beat.
"They're the strongest team," he said.
Only a matter of time
Nevertheless, Philippine Football Federation president Johnny Romualdez warned his rivals not to underestimate the home team, in front of a home crowd.
"Philippine football has gotten stronger because of them," Romualdez said, referring to the Younghusband brothers, adding that it was only a matter of time before the country started making a mark on the football map.
Ironically, the Philippines virtually introduced football to Asia when in 1913 it organized the first regional match. It played China and won 2-1 in Manila, according to the ASEAN Football Federation.

A grand production featuring the best of Cebu will open the 23rd Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) as ASEAN Paralympics gold medallist Arnold Balais will have the honor to light the SEAG Urn, 4 pm today at the Cebu City Sports Center.
But the opening salvo will unfold without the presence of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, who begged off due to a special commitment in Manila.
Tourism secretary Ace Durano will take the place of President Arroyo as guest speaker for the event.
Durano will be with Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) president and Philippine SEAG Organizing Committee CEO Peping Cojuangco, Philippine Sports Commission chairman William "Butch" Ramirez and the different heads of the National Sports Associations.
Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia, Cebu City Mayor Tommy Osmeña, Mandaue City Mayor Teddy Ouano and Danao City Mayor Ramon 'Nito' Durano III will also be attending.
Cebu Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (CebuSoc) chairman Jonathan Guardo considers the SEAG opening rites today as the "mother of all opening ceremonies."
"Aside from feeling the SEA Games fever, it will also be a one of a kind musical extravaganza with the grand production numbers to be performed. The fireworks display is also something to look forward to," added Guardo.
The opening ceremony will officially start with the parade of nations from Fuente Osmeña to the sports center. All the 11 delegations will be accompanied by the different university dance troupes wearing the national costumes of the countries while dancing to the Sinulog beat.
Abellana National School dancers will join athletes from Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia will have Cebu Normal University, Indonesia with University of Southern Philippines Foundation, and Laos by Cebu Institute of Technology.
University of Cebu will accompany Malaysia, Philippines by University of San Carlos, Myanmar by Cebu State College of Science & Technology, Thailand by Southwestern University, Timor Leste by University of the Visayas, Singapore by University of San Jose-Recoletos and Vietnam by Cebu Doctor's University.
A three-part opening ceremony organized by Dolly Suzara and Ricky Ballesteros, will feature 1,500 cultural dancers performing the dances of the different Island Festivals of Cebu.
Cebu's Island Festival like the Mantawi of Mandaue, the Sinanggiyaw of Dumanjug, Karansa of Danao, Palawod of Bantayan and the winners of the 2005 Sinulog namely Compostela (2nd place Sinulog-Based) and Basakanon of Basak San Nicolas (Grand Prize Winner Sinulog 2005) will be showcased.
A 10-minute fireworks display will serve as a fitting finale to the affair with the performance of 100 voices singing to a live accompaniment by no less than the Peace Philharmonic Philippines.
Meanwhile, Cebuano athletes who are members of the national team will also take center-stage today in the torch relay.
They are Nino Surban and Maritess Bitbit for mountainbike, Noel Espinosa and Luchie Metante for karatedo and Metodio Suico, Jr. and Harrison Castañares for sepak takraw.
Roda Mae Fernandez and Kevin Miñoza will represent dancesport while pencak silat will have Christopher Yabut and Marniel Dimla and judo with John Baylon and Helen Dawa.
Balais, a gold medallist in the swimming event of the 1st ASEAN Paralympics in Malaysia, will light the urn of Friendship.
Gretchen Malalad, gold medallist in the 2005 Open Karatedo Championship in Italy and France, will lead the Oath of Sportsmanship while Edward John Ponce leads the Pledge of Officiating Officials.
In a related development, deputy chief de mission for Cebu Councilor Sylvan "Jack" Jakosalem will lead Team Philippines during the parade of athletes today.
The battle for the gold medals here in Cebu will start Sunday with dancesport to kick off the hostilities at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug.
Karatedo action will also start at the Mandaue City Sports and Cultural Center from November 27 to 29. Judo will be played on the same venue from December 1 to 4. Sepak takraw will be played at the University of San Carlos Gym on November 28 to December 4, pencak silat at the Cebu Coliseum on November 30 to December 4 and mountainbike on November 28 to 29 in Danao City. The cities of Cebu, Mandaue and Danao will be shelling out additional funding from their coffers if PhjilSOC can not provide enough funding to support the volunteers, who will be helping run the SEA Games. The funds will also cover for the food of the personnel from the Philippine National Police (PNP), who will be taking charge of the security of the SEA Games here.
Earlier, PhilSOC promised to give daily food allowance to the volunteers plus T-shirts and identification cards, but the highest organizing body is yet to fulfill its promise.
In Danao City alone, the needed fund support for subsistence equivalent to six meals of the 279 PNP personnel deployed for the period will cost P83,700. The personnel will be deployed one day before actual activity and will be pulled out after the bike competition.
Here in Cebu City, the Cebu City Sports Commission (CCSC) is also not leaving behind the volunteers and the CCSC slicing around P400,000 from its 2005 budget to be allocated for the food of the volunteers.
PSCCommisioner Richie Garcia, on the other hand, assured that the volunteers in the SEA Games will have their allowances as promised but the budget for the food allowance will be remitted here in Cebu and other venues at least two days before the action proper.
Each volunteer is reportedly being allocated P200 per day for food expenses. Now, PhilSOC is still reviewing their financial statement and cannot tell yet as to how much funding it can share for Cebu.
"Pinapahalagahan din natin ang mga volunteers. Rest assured, we're doing all that we can to address this problem," Garcia said.
But Garcia said the meal allowances of the security personnel, like the Philippine National Police, among others, will not be coming from PhilSOC.
Garcia made it clear that even from the start, there was never a promise of giving the police and other members of the security group meal allowances. The budget for the members of the security force will be coming from their own organizations.
In another development, CITOM and the traffic group of Cebu City Police Office informed the riding public of the temporary rerouting during the SEA Games parade today from Fuente Osmeña to the Cebu City Sports Center. In line with this rerouting, several jeepney routes such as route numbers 04B, 04D, 04E, 14D, 15B, 16B, 17B and 17D are affected. These are the jeepney routes bound for Lahug area down to Colon area. Passenger jeep with routes number 03B (Mabolo-Jones), 21B (Mandaue Ibabao-Jones) and 22B (Mandaue Ouano-Jones) shall pass Gen. Maxilom Ave. then left turn to F. Ramos St, then to Junquera St, then to Sanciangco St. down to Osmeña Blvd.
Other routes such as the Basak jeepney bound for Colon (09C and 09F) and Pardo jeepneys bound for Colon (10H and 10J) are also affected including passenger jeepneys with route numbers 12B, 12D, 12E and 12J. Traffic group chief Julius Cesar Gornez is advising motorists, drivers and other road users to observe and follow traffic sign boards installed in the affected areas. - with Mitchelle P.
