Hey man, C'mon it's not our fault! We were born in America where we only speak hmong at home!!! I actually speak hmong very good (even GREEN hmong too!!! because I used to hang with my Green cousins, I like to fool people for fun sometimes), but I just don't know the very DEEP words.....Like you know when you go to weddings and stuff and what the elders say at the tables....I'm starting to learn though.....because they're starting to call me up to do those things......

I can read a bit hmong too....but not very good....noone ever taught me but you can pretty much figure out how it works because it's Romanized and not our REAL ancient writing.....which I don't think anyone knows.....

I only started speaking more English when I moved to the Suburbs about 7 years ago.......Kinda embarassing when a White Missionary knows more Hmong than us young'ns! And they had to learn the language!!! We grew up on it!

Starting to play Qeej too!!

It'd be better if you had a better topic title. More of a descriptive. Also, I am Hmong, yet I don't write or talk hmong, because well. I don't know much. I talk hmong at home only. Sometimes in school. And what you said..Heck, I understand the first three words...I don't know the rest. Besides Hmong. I know the basics. Koj, Kuv, Hlub, Yog, Paj...Yeah... sure.gif I'm not ashamed of it either. My parents don't teach me Hmong. Although they're considering it. I learn as I go. I learned some from my grandman also. Like lilasiankid said. I was born in The United States. Not in Laos, or Thailand.

icon_redface.gif Yes, I know it that your to use our language in the house nothing else and when you are in your school or you are with your friends, you don't speak hmong... I am thought that you don't speak hmong with your friends that are hmong for hmong language, neither your parents, and neither your family.

Mere... please you do remember that we are hmong, if you don't write or do you speak hmong, that is not important for the one who... but does it mean that you these to leave it of your town, of your parents, and one day in future in of the world there is not hmong language, neither hmong... that you want him to go to it exists? bawling.gif

is the hmong in it USA they speak English, neither those that are neither in Thailand, neither those in Laos, and other countries... that will happen?

A friend told me that her parents don't enrage it, that I don't believe it for that hmong habit, casí to all has learned hmong from we have been up to now children. also, if it compares the language hmong with other language. The hmong easier language, you only learn two or three you give, you can write, but if you don't want it. that is another case.

Uh...

No, We're the same Hmong..

seeing as we come from the same parents..

crazy a$$.

We're Neither White or Green but a Mix of it.

Since Our Dad is White and Our Mom is Green. That's why if you were talking to Mom, sometimes she won't understand and same thing goes with Dad.[Although we hardly ever speak Hmong with Dad]. Just the other night when I was out of the house I was talking to Mom over the Cell Phone, i was trying to tell her in Hmong that some kid is going to drive us but she couldn't understand because i was saying "Young Guy" in dad's language and not in her language.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And as for the Topic Maker's request for Writing in Hmong..

It won't do much seeing as anyone can go look for something in their house with Hmong writing on it then just post it here, and ask their parents/guardian for what it means.
lilasiankid
I still talk alot of hmong though....At home I talk mostly Hmong to my parents.....and with Friends they always talk english, but when They ask me questions or when I say stuff, sometimes I'll say it in Hmong.......

Hey VUE, it's kinda hard to understand what your saying.....a lot of typos....

Man, do Hmong people seriously have a hard time understanding between White and Green???? It's so easy to talk in them both........BUT YOU KNOW WHAT IS HARDER TO UNDERSTAND??? HMONG-CHINESE!!!! IT'S LIKE GREEN HMONG BUT WITH A REALLY CHINESE DIALECT........If you couldn't speak Hmong or Chinese, you would think you were hearing Chinese....It sounds pretty cool though, It's cool to watch Chinese Movies dubbed in Hmong Chinese.........sounds Chinese and Hmong at the same time!!!

icon_neutral.gif

the last part to your hmong sentence doesn't make a lick of sense... "koj li lub thiab"???... haha... geee if you're telling these people to write hmong in their hmong language then actually do it correctly and set a good model.... *laughable* golly wholly... and hmong isn't really spelled HMONG it's freaking Hmoob dude.

shouldn't it be: yog koj yog hmoob thov sau lus hmoob.

it's simpler and makes more sense to just say: if you're hmong, please write hmong.

genius.gif bringing up a point: writing hmong in this fashion isn't technically hmoob hmoob... hmong people have a more ancient way of writing like the chinese, laos and thai people. writing hmong the way you do is technically only romanized. furthermore, you can be hmong and not know how to write and read in hmong... you're an idiot. if you're hmong, you're hmong! you can't ignore that fact... duh. icon_wink.gif

I understand your concern of the Hmong language disappearing. I truely believe that our language will not fade away as long as there are institutions that are teaching it. Some colleges teach the Hmong language. Another institution that puts a lot of emphasis on the Hmong language are the Hmong churches. The Bible and the Song books are in Hmong. So, not being able to read, speak, or comprehend the Hmong language doesn't make you less of a Hmong. Excepting your Hmong heritage makes you a Hmong. Don't worry about the Hmong people. We're like weeds, cut one down and ten more pops up.

I surprised my parents when I was 5 years old and reading a letter from Laos written in Hmong to my parents.

I was surprised that a white american baby about 2 months old is speaking in Hmong:
Nam - Mom
Phem - Meanie
Npwv - Drink
Mig - Milk
Am - dirty
So, I tell the mother what her baby was saying, and absolutely, he was hungry and already pooped his diapers and she kept him crying without picking up him to hold for a while.

My bf told me that all babies born to speak Hmong, then they will gradually learn to speak the language their parents or guardians are speaking. He also said that no one else claim who were Adam and Eve, but Hmong say that Adam and Eve were Hmong. The first people were Hmong. Adam and Eve in Hmong are Nkauj Ab (Eve) & Nraug Oo (Adam) -Green Hmong dialect. Green Hmong dialect?...no wonder that baby I just mention up there is speaking in Green Hmong dialect.

No wonder a Hmong person can speak Hmong, Thai, Lao, Khmer, English, Japanese, French, Chinese,...

I like the thought of that; however, I think it's more a coincidence. Babies to infants to toddlers tend to make up their own language during this time period. They may have the perception of the word, thus try to make the sound; however, they've not fully developed the coherent sound making of words by means of physicality and physiologically, as I'd like to say, thus they may stumble upon the attempt to word-sounding familiar to another language by accident. Heck, it could be any language in any dialect by random chance. I believe in post-infant to toddler years are the first stage for the little one to start learning what you teach him/her the language of choice, after they have made use of their five senses. That's my analogy of it, and there are articles as well as books with more factual representation from research studies which anyone can google it for more info.

As for a Hmong person can speak Hmong, Thai, Lao, Khmer, English, Japanese, French, Chinese, etc... I am skeptic about your claim there. I'm not denouncing your conjecture there because there some Hmong that are able to speak a few other languages besides their native language, it is after learning how to speak it.

On topic though, I think Vue is just trying to encourage Hmong individuals to keep the language strong. With several people here, I also agree that the language will not go extinct. The vernacular might change but that's to be expected.

You're bf is bullsh!tting you. Human brains are developed to acquire language. A better argument would be that some Hmong words mean what they sound. Believe me, I tried learning Spanish and failed quite miserably. ANYONE will pick up that language that they are surrounded by.

Also, just because someone cannot read and write Hmong doesn't mean they are not Hmong.
