I think the hardest asian language to learn is the unspoken language, since everyone has yet to figure out all the non-sounds used in its pronunciation, and find out also how structured its grammar is ?

There's this guy named Laoshu in this forum who can speak, Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Thai and Viet. He said that Thai was the hardest one to learn.

Depends on which language you already can speak... For non-asians all languages are very hard too learn.

I think it probably depends on what your native language is. If your native language is, for example, Korean, it would probably be considerably easier for you to learn Japanese than Burmese. On the other hand, if your native language is Tibetan it would probably be the opposite. If your native language is English it would probably be very difficult to learn Cantonese or Khmer. Probably not so hard to learn an Austronesian language like Malay or Tagalog.

I, personally, have studied a number of "Asian" languages (my native language is Portuguese) and I find Korean to be the hardest but that's just me.

The only most difficult asian language I can think of, is any language for which I have no pactical use... beerchug.gif

i agree, that does make sense... im trying to learn japanese at the moment, but i get the feeling that picking up korean words is easier than picking up japanese words by listening. i might be wrong though, just a feeling embarassedlaugh.gif

you must be chinese?

Anyways I think it really depends on your native language if you want to know which language is hardest to learn. I personally think Japanese is the hardest to learn in sentence structures and grammar. I'm currently studying Japanese and it is not easy as I thought it would be. I think Korean is hardest to learn how to write and read. Of the other Asian languages that I can think of, they look pretty easy to learn.

^ True. depends on ur native language too.. It was pretty hard for me to learn to speak english when I was young lol... but now' I am consider a native speaker.. As with Spanish I can pass to be a native speaker too.. haha. I'm learning Chinese and that seems to be pretty easy .. So far for me the hardest language will be Thai/Laos because the accents are different and I'm not use to it.. other than that learning a lanauage is pretty fun.. Took me six years to be fluent in Spanish....

Japanese is difficult. Kanji kills me over and over and over again. And when I thought I had conquered part of it, I was fooled. Foreign languages are painful, but fun.

I agree, japanese grammar is not too difficult. I'm really putting an effort into learning kanji, though. One of my friends said that learning kanji is like learning how to ride a bike. I remember whacking him on the head and askhing what the hell does that mean? He said because you keep falling but you'll get up again. At the end, you will master it.

I don't know about mastering it. All i know is the falling part.

chinese people, can somewhat make out the meaning of simple japanese sentences if it includes kanji...i dont pay attention in my j@p class, as long as i get an A im cool with it embarassedlaugh.gif2 indeed japanese sentence structure in very complex, it takes a lot to get a simple meaning across.....chinese is much easier to learn, but the higher level literature is more difficult than any other language perhaps.
it is almost impossible to explain to foreigners the true meanings of the advanced chinese writtings such as the tang dynasty poems since separate characters form conglomerations without any meaning in other languages bawling.gif

To me Japanese is really hard to learn. Cuz the languages sounded so difficult.
That's why I'm trying to take a Japanese class during summer school. embarassedlaugh.gif

Thai pronunciation is easy (though I'm not considering the tones), it's just that there's a lot of bad romanizations out there that could mess up a native-English speaker. Romanization for Thai is very ambiguous because they use a lot of the same letters to represent different sounds. So that is where I think it becomes difficult. However, if you learn to read the script first, then pronunciation should be a easier. But that may be a little ambiguous as well because it may be difficult to tell when a word starts or ends or if there is a consonant cluster or not.

Pronouncing Thai, I think, is like Japanese. However the vowels are slightly more complex.

chinese.... biggrin.gif

i think cambodian is hard to learn because it have a lot of cluster. try saying kb, tr, sd, km.
