TOP FIVE MULTIDISCIPLINARY UNIVERSITIES IN THE PHILIPPINES (in alphabetical order)

Ateneo de Manila University

Lux in Domino, meaning “Light in the Lord.”

The Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) is a private university run by the Society of Jesus in the Philippines. Its main campus is located in Quezon City, Metro Manila. It offers programs at the elementary, secondary, college, graduate, and post-graduate levels in various fields such as the arts, humanities, business, law, social sciences, theology, and the pure and applied sciences. It is one of only two schools in the country to receive Level IV accreditation, the highest possible level, from the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines and the PAASCU. This mark of distinction is awarded to institutions which have distinguished themselves in a broad area of academic discipline and enjoy prestige and authority comparable to that of international universities.

The university is highly involved in civic work, and for the Ateneo, social involvement is not merely extra-curricular, but is at the very core of the Ateneo education. Some of the Ateneo's social projects such as the Ateneo-Mangyan Project for Understanding and Development and Bigay Puso at the Grade School, the Christian Service and Involvement Program, Banlaw immersion, and Tulong Dunong program for senior students, all at the High School, at the College, the many progams by the Office of Social Concern and Involvement such as builds with Gawad Kalinga and Kalinga Luzon, the Labor Trials Program which is tied in with juniors' Philosophy classes, and at the Professional Schools, projects such as the Graduate School of Business' Mulat-Diwa, the Leaders for Health Project, the Law School's Human Rights Center and Legal Aid programs, to name a few. Other projects include the Pathways to Higher Education program, a tie-up with the Ford Foundation which is a comprehensive response to the problem faced by academically-gifted by financially-underprivileged youth who who seek a college education. There are also programs by the Ateneo Center for Educational Development.

De La Sale University

De La Salle University (DLSU), which is a private university, was established in 1911 by the Brothers of Christian Schools, or in Latin, Fraternum Christianarum Scholarum. The University draws inspiration from the life and the works of the institution's founding father, St. John Baptist De La Salle (Saint Jean Baptiste de la Salle, in French). The university is situated right in the heart of Malate, a district of the City of Manila. It is near the border of Manila with Pasay City. Its address is 2401 Senator W. Diokno (Taft) Avenue. Its primary goal is to train future Christian achievers for God and country. It is the first of only two universities in the Philippines to earn a Level IV accreditation—the highest possible level—granted by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU).

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (University of the City of Manila)

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, or the University of the City of Manila (PLM), is a city government-funded, tuition-free, university within the district of Intramuros in Manila, the Philippines. It was established on June 19, 1965 by virtue of Republic Act No. 4196, now known as the University Charter and opened on July 17, 1967. With twelve (12) colleges, two (2) professional schools, seven (7) graduate schools, an open university and distance learning program, an integrated learning center for toddlers, a score of specialized centers and recently, a city-wide network of district colleges, PLM is proud to be among the top universities in the country today with affiliations and recognitions of outstanding excellence from various national and international organizations and institutions. So much of a distinction the PLM has achieved that it has been cited as among the best and topnotch institutions of higher learning not only in the country, but regionally and internationally as well.

Based on the reports of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC), PLM ranks among the top five schools and is one among only three public universities in the top ten category. As a testament to this excellence, the CHED has publicly commended PLM for its unprecedented track record for scaling great heights yet unmeasured in the country which fittingly serves as a model university for all locally-funded institutions of higher learning to emulate -- citing further that "PLM's excellence is beyond doubt and is a class of its own." Recently, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, President of the Philippine Republic, cited PLM for its "Culture of Excellence" and for impressive accomplishments in various fields.

University of the Philippines System

The University of the Philippines (Unibersidad ng Pilipinas in Filipino) or U.P. is the premier state university of the Philippines. It was founded in 1908 and is now composed of seven autonomous constituent universities around the country providing tertiary-level education in almost every field from agriculture, medicine, and law, to the natural and social sciences, engineering, creative writing and fine arts. U.P. is a highly reputable school of tertiary learning, and more high school students apply to it than any other college or university in the country. U.P. is also noted for its highly politicized and activist student body promoting stands on national issues, as well its subscription to academic freedom and excellence.

At present, the University of the Philippines System is composed of seven Autonomous Universities located in over 10 campuses around the country. U.P. Diliman is the flagship campus of the university and specializes in liberal arts, law, engineering, social sciences, natural sciences, business and economics, and fine arts. U.P. Manila is geared toward medicine and operates the Philippine General Hospital (PGH). U.P. Los Baños specializes in biotechnology, agriculture, and forestry, while U.P. Visayas concentrates mostly on fisheries. The U.P. Open University provides open and distance education.

University of Santo Tomas

The Royal and Pontifical University of Santo Tomas (UST) is a private Catholic university run by the Order of Preachers. It is one of the world's largest Catholic universities in terms of population. It was established in April 28, 1611, and claims to be the oldest existing university in the Philippines and in Asia. This is disputed by the University of San Carlos in Cebu, Philippines, which was founded in 1595 but became a university only in 1948.

ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY

The Ateneo de Manila Seal
In 1859, the Escuela Municipal carried the coat of arms of the city of Manila, granted by King Philip II of Spain. By 1865, along with the change of name, the school's seal had evolved to include some religious images such as the Jesuit monogram "IHS" and some Marian symbols. A revision was introduced in the school's golden jubilee 1909 with clearer Marian symbols and the current motto, Lux in Domino. This seal was retained for 20 years.

Father Rector Richard O’Brien, S.J. introduced a new seal for Ateneo de Manila’s diamond jubilee in 1929. This seal abandons the arms of Manila and instead adopts a design that uses mostly Jesuit and Ignatian symbols. This is the seal currently used by Ateneo.

The seal is defined by two semi-circular ribbons. The crown (top) ribbon contains the school motto, “Lux-in-Domino”, while the base (bottom) ribbon contains the school name, “Ateneo de Manila”. These ribbons define a circular field on which rests the shield of Oñaz-Loyola: a combination of the arms of the paternal and maternal sides of the family of St. Ignatius.

In precise heraldic terms, the Shield of Oñaz-Loyola may be described as: "Party per pale: Or, seven bendlets Gules; Argent, a two-eared pot hanging on a chain between two wolves rampant." In plain English, the shield is gold, and divided vertically. To the viewer's left is a field of gold with seven red bands. These are the arms of Oñaz, Ignatius' paternal family, which commemorates seven family heroes who fought with the Spaniards against 70,000 French, Navarese, and Gascons. To the viewer's right is a white or silver field with the arms of Loyola, Ignatius' maternal family. The arms consist of a two-eared pot hanging on a chain between two rampant wolves, which symbolize the nobility. The name "Loyola" is actually a contraction of lobos y olla (wolves and pot). The name springs from the family's reputation of being able to provide so well that they could feed even wild wolves.

Above the shield is a Basque sunburst, referring to Ignatius' Basque roots, and also representing a consecrated host. It bears the letters IHS, the first three letters of the Holy Name of Jesus in Greek, and an adaptation of the emblem of the Society of Jesus. Many erroneously believe that the Ateneo de Manila seal features the letters JHS. This stems from the peculiar rendering of the letters in the Ateneo de Manila seal. The letter I is drawn in a florid calligraphic style that conforms to the circle’s shape. It therefore appears similar to a J.

The seal’s colors are blue, white, red, and gold. In traditional heraldry, white or silver (Argent) represents a commitment to peace and truth. Blue (Azure) represents fortitude and loyalty. Red (Gules) represens martyrdom, sacrifice, and strength. Gold (Or) represents nobility and generosity.

White and blue are also Ateneo’s school colors, the colors of Mary. Red and gold are the colors of Spain, home of Ignatius and the Ateneo’s Jesuit founders. Finally, these four tinctures mirror the tinctures of the Philippine flag, marking the Ateneo’s identity as a Filipino University.

Vision-Mission Statement

As a University, the Ateneo de Manila seeks to preserve, extend, and communicate truth and apply it to human development and the preservation of the environment.

As a Filipino University, the Ateneo de Manila seeks to identify and enrich Philippine culture and make its own. Through the education of the whole person and the formation of needed professionals and through various corporate activities, the University aims to contribute to the development goals of the nation.

As a Catholic University, the Ateneo de Manila seeks to form persons who, following the teachings and example of Christ, will devote their lives to the service of others and, through the promotion of justice, serve especially those who are most in need of help, the poor and the powerless. Loyal to the teachings of the Catholic Church, the University seeks to serve the Faith and to interpret its teachings to modern Philippine society.

As a Jesuit University, the Ateneo de Manila seeks the goals of Jesuit liberal education through the harmonious development of moral and intellectual virtues. Imbued with the Ignatian spirit, the University aims to lead its students to see God in all things and to strive for the greater glory of God and the greater service of mankind.

The University seeks all these, as an academic community, through the exercise of the functions proper to a university, that is, through teaching, research and service to the community.

Our reflection on the Jesuit and Ignatian Tradition invites us to view the Ateneo Graduate School of Business as a major instrument of the Ateneo de Manila University in the pursuit of its mission and vision in the field of business management. Our thrust is to make our students PRIMUS INTER PARES, "first among equals", recognizing them as workplace-based professionals who are leaders in their respective organizations. We give premium to learning that is distilled from both classroom and business experiences, wherein one experience enriches the other. Theories learned are validated and made relevant in the workplace, and work experience is deepened and given structure in academic life.

Mapua Institute of Technology is one of the best schools of engineering and IT in the country, however, it does not belong to the top five multidisciplinary universities in the Philippines mentioned by Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

Far Eastern University (FEU) is a good university but it is certainly not among the top five universities nationwide.

Go UP Diliman!!!

Not sure if it is the biggest university though... but one could really get lost inside... but just take the IKOT and TOKI jeeps and you;ll be back where you first started....

I think what's great about the UP education is that they really train you to be independent and "maabilidad". Experiencing all those loooong queus in registration (some sleep overnight to be first in queue) just to get the nicest teachers. I dont know how to translate "maaabilidad" but it's something that gets you where you want to be. I just heard my batchmate is now an AVP of a multi national company. Wow! biggthumpup.gif I think graduates from UP and PLM are both known for their being creative and intelligent people. I worked with graduates from both schools.

I think the education system of both schools forsters independence, hard work, perseverance and passion (for what one is tasked to do or achieve) in their students.

I hope that there will more graduates, not only from those two schools, who will positively represent Filipino professionals in many different arena. We were once the benchmark of professionalism in the whole of Asia; once again let us prove to the world that professionalism is very much alive in today's Filipino youth. We can make our country regain its gradeur.

hey, UP go! Up fight! hey, let's go, let's fight!!!

one can easily get lost inside the diliman campus, but as cuteangelika said, you can always ride the ikot and toki jeepneys. they're the ones with the yellow roofs. also, the fare is cheaper; it's P 6.50, instead of the usual minimum P7.50.
but if you prefer to take a stroll around the place, the students will always be kind enough to give you directions. besides, walking is the better alternative if you really want to take in the scenery. the canopy of acasia trees lining the academic oval is always beautiful to look at especially around 7-9 am. embarassedlaugh.gif2

The heraldric supporter is a sarimanok motif, in full color, projecting the nationalistic spirit upon which the University was founded. It also serves as the link between the past and the present.

University Colors

The University colors are green and gold. Gold represents the golden opportunity for the University to serve the youth and for her alumni to serve the country. Green is for hope, representing Rizal’s "fair hope of the fatherland."

The Mace

The mace is the symbol of the Office of the President and is displayed in official University functions at which the President presides. It consists of the University seal done in solid bronze, resting on a finely carved staff of Philippine hardwood.

The Tamaraw

The Tamaraw is the mascot of every FEU athletic team. Hence, is the pet name of every FEU student. Known scientifically as bubalus mindorensis, it is a rare animal found only in the island of Mindoro. Symbolically enough, the Tamaraw is one of the most intelligent, pugnacious, and aggressive of our animal species, just as the University is known for its bold, progressive policy in contemporary education.

tama. di naman nasusukat ang kalidad ng isang eskwelahan o unibersidad sa dami ng mga nag-aaral dito.

Though I believe PLM is a very good institution of learning, I doubt that it should land in the top five. Marami pang kakainin ang PLM para maparisan ang ibang mas deserving for 5th place -- University of San Carlos, Silliman University, Saint Louis University and Mindanao State University - IIT.

la salle is i think 497th place in this years ranking of the best universities of the world...

What ranking was it that placed DLSU at 497th? Anyways, recently (2007), the much criticized THES-QS World University Ranking placed the Philippines' Big Four in this order:
UPD 399th
ADMU 451st
DLSU 519th
UST 535th

Also, this blog says that the TOP 5 which included PLM was according to CHED. However, in the CHED website, PLM will not make it into the TOP TEN, counting the number of COEs (Centers of Excellence) and CODs (Centers of Development). The Top Ten are as follows:
1. UPD -- 24 COEs, 9CODs
2. UST -- 11 COEs, 21 CODs
3. DLSU-M -- 11 COEs, 4 CODs
4. ADMU -- 11 COEs, 2 CODs
5. UPLB -- 9 COEs, 2 CODs
6. MSU -- 4 COEs, 7 CODs
7. Silliman -- 3 COEs, 5 CODs
8. USC -- 2 COEs, 8 CODs
9. Xavier -- 2 COEs, 8 CODs
10. SLU -- 2 COEs, 7 CODs
Now tell me Mr. Pedro, where is PLM?

Harvard has no problem rejecting valedictorians who have taken plenty of Advance Placement classes(The highest type of class in the U.S.)

We definitely need more funding for education. CHED isn't really doing a good job of monitoring the quality of education. They shouldn't give accreditation to sub-standard institutions, and man, are there plenty of them.

Perhaps it gives some vanity when someone underscore where they got their diploma...it makes me smile to think that these universities is where most of our country's leaders came from but still our country is in $..hit. Probably their brains worth millions on paying tuition fees... but the same education I can get by paying no more than a hundred pesos on library books overdue penalty.
