Geisha, means person of the arts or artist, are traditional Japanese artist-entertainers. In Japan they use the word Geiko to refer such those persons.

In the 18th and 19th centuries Geisha could be seen everywhere and it still exists until today but a lot dwindling.

The misunderstand belief that Geisha are the prostitutes are totally wrong Geisha are not prostitutes, this mistaken belief has been started from Japanese prostitutes who wish to co-optation the prestige of the Geisha image and some of the westerner inaccurate depicted them.

Some Geisha may choose to engage in sexual relations with her patrons but she is not forced to do so.

It's not just the imperfect English. The accent is a throwback to the exotification, asian-woman-as-sex-slave lore. Absolutely disgusting. "Music is the ARTT of conversation." I wouldn't be surprised if their characters start talking in fortune cookie parables and allegories involving dragons and turtles. Disgusting.

ps: Everyone should bear in mind that the book was written by a white guy.
