For the first time in pageant history Puerto Rico is proclaimed "Country of the Year". If historically this Caribbean island has been one of the most successful countries in Miss Universe, until 2005 it had never been able to combined excellent results in 3 grand slam pageants, including a Miss Universe's 1st runner-up, a Miss World's 2nd runner-up and a Miss Earth's top 8 semifinalist (a first for Puerto Rico). Puerto Rico had the best overall performance in 2005.
Just behind it, we find another Caribbean powerhouse, the Dominican Republic, who did amazingly well in Miss Universe (3rd place), Miss International (2nd place) and Miss Earth (2nd place), but failed to make the cut in Miss World, a competition worth 40 points.
Confirming an exceptional year for the Americas, Mexico comes in third place, after having placed in both Miss Universe (4th) and Miss World (2nd) for the second straight year. Might it decide to take Miss International and Earth seriously in the future, and soon we shall see Mexico in an even bigger position. Venezuela, last in 2004 with zero points, returned to the top in 4th place, with a Miss Earth winner, a Miss Universe's 4th runner-up and a Miss International's semifinalist.
It is followed by Canada, 5th, with its 2nd victory in Miss Universe and a semifinalist in Miss World.
The first country outside of the Americas to appear in our list is the Philippines, Asia's best in 2005 with its first grand slam winner in 26 years (Miss International). It was also a dream year for Tanzania, 7th overall, tied with surprising Korea and the United States, and topping the African group. Tanzania had never scored in any grand slam pageant until 2005.
Finally we have Iceland rounding up the top 10 and being named best European nation of 2005, as a result of the crowning of its 3rd Miss World. No country from Oceania scored in 2005.
Congratulations to the top 10 nations of 2005, especially to Puerto Rico, best among the best!
TANZANIA IS THE "BEST MOVER" OF 2005Tanzania had already sent some very competitive delegates to Miss World, including a press favorite in 2001. However, it was only in 2005 that it enjoyed the taste of success in two grand slam pageants, with a Miss Earth's semifinalist and a Miss World's finalist and Queen of Africa. As a result, Tanzania moved 37 positions up in the Grand Slam Ranking from 2004 to 2005, the best record of 2005. Tanzania was named "Best Mover of 2005", a great a accomplishment for this East African nation, now 55th.
Iceland comes next in this list. After not being able to defend its 1995 Miss International points, Iceland descended to the 93rd position in the Grand Slam ranking in September. A Miss World victory though, earned it 40 points and 34 positions: up to 56th!
Other great movers of 2005 were Latvia (+23), Switzerland (+17), Northern Ireland (+12), U.S. Virgin Islands (+12) and Paraguay (+10). Canada (+4, now 14th), Mexico (+8, now 13th) and Puerto Rico (+4, now 6th) made some significant improvement as well.
VENEZUELA REMAINS ON THE TOP, BUT INDIA NOW HAS A REAL CHANCE TO CATCH ITAfter a tragic 2004, Venezuela came back considerably stronger in 2005: it bagged the Miss Earth crown and did quite well in Miss Universe and Miss International. The problem is Miss World, Venezuela's worst nightmare. After failing to make the cut for the 2nd year in a row, Venezuela lost 40 very precious points from Jacqueline Aguilera's victory back in 1995. With India surprising Miss World placement (mind you that India had not earned any points in 1995), the gap between the two powerhouses closed in 60 points, although Venezuela remains the ranking's leader.
The battle between these two countries in 2006 will be quite interesting, considering that both have some important points from 1996 to defend, especially Venezuela and Alicia Machado's 40 points from Miss Universe.
Meanwhile, Puerto Rico has moved from 10th to 6th place. It is now very close to a top 5 position, which could happen depending on how Colombia and South Africa perform in 2006.
The Philippines (8th) is also "on the rise", and is another country we should keep an eye on. Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Canada are all at the doorstep of a TOP 10 position.
The biggest losers of 2006, who next year will attempt to regain some ground were Bolivia (-14, 49th), El Salvador (-15, 61st), Vietnam (-12, 65th), Croatia (-30, 71st), and Bulgaria (-26, 95th).
