FUKUSHIMA--In an unusual case, a 71-year-old woman was indicted Monday on charges of embezzling 13.8 million yen from her 14-year-old grandson.
Prosecutors say Takano Yamaguchi, guardian of the boy, took the money from his savings here. His uncle, Hiroyuki Yamaguchi, 46, and aunt, Kyoko Yamaguchi, 48, were also indicted.
The case is unusual because crimes such as theft committed between family members are usually not prosecuted under the Criminal Law.
The family court had selected the grandmother as the guardian for the boy after his mother died of an illness in June 2001. The grandmother was supposed to manage the mother's life insurance money and deposits.
The three suspects withdrew cash on a number of occasions from the mother's savings account from August 2001 to November 2003 for travel expenses, car payments and other purposes.
