Ya my friend was trying to explain it to me earlier but he's the same one who thought Korea was a province of China so I'm going to assume everything he said was wrong. Since he didn't even see the movie anyway... icon_confused.gif

yeah its more like courtesans. they are trained in poetry, art (painting, etc), musical instruments, dances, ceremonies, songs.

but there are different levels of a geisha.

They're kind of relics today. Geisha today are really preserving tradition, rather than focusing mainly on entertainment.

Geisha, means person of the arts or artist, are traditional Japanese artist-entertainers. In Japan they use the word Geiko to refer such those persons.
In the 18th and 19th centuries Geisha could be seen everywhere and it still exists until today but a lot dwindling.

Geisha of Japan is just like speakers in English but Geisha also carried connotations of prostitution, some young Japanese women faced finance shortage so they sold themselves to American troops for money.

geisha are not prostitutes. geisha tie the obi in the back the prostitutues tie the obi in the front, so that they can tie and untie it more than once in a night. geisha might have sex with men but they dont do it everynight and they have one man generally. they are artisans who are keeping a rapidly dying culture alive a culture dying due to technology and western influence.
