University lecturer mows down old woman
MITO -- A university lecturer was arrested Saturday for driving off after running over an old woman as she lay on the ground after having been hit by another car, police said.
Yasuo Tanaka, 67, a part-time lecturer at Ibaraki University, was arrested for breaking the Road Traffic Law.
Tanaka admits to running into the woman, but denies the allegations.
"I thought I'd run into some black object, so I did a U-turn and had a look and saw there was a person lying on the ground. I didn't think it had anything to do with me, so I drove off," police quoted Tanaka as saying.
Police said Tanaka ploughed his car into 81-year-old Mito pensioner Yoshino Oginuma and then drove off.
Oginuma suffered massive head injuries and died almost immediately. However, immediately before Tanaka's car hit Oginuma, a 35-year-old man had run into her.
