Why is it that us Americans are so freakin fat, and asians don't know how to gain a pound.

The answer. Americans trust their docters to tell them the most healthy ways to eat.
Sadly most american docters could care less about you being healthy.

But the japanese diet which has a large abundance of organtic and natural foods, with low fat and suger intake, is superb.

Why don't we start eating like asia, and MDs and Mcdonalds to shove their stuff up their. @@@ beerchug.gif

Plus american store bought unorgantic vegetables and fruit, are mostly full of noxoius chemicals.

There are a lot of reasons why American diets are subpar to Japanese diets. For one, the average American serving is much larger than the average Japanese serving, both when we cook at home and at restaurants. Secondly, Americans have developed psychological attachments to foods, that's due to innumberable causes (advertisements, cultural heritage, traditional foods, using cookies, candies, etc. for rewards...the list goes on). Third, Americans have a much more laid-back attitude, which leads them to want everything fast and with minimal work. This has led many Americans to favor dining out over dining in. The average American restaurant serving averages out to be almost enough calories for an entire day. Also, Americans are big snackers, and when we snack often times we aren't looking for something to make us not hungry, we are looking for something that makes us feel better emotionally or suppresses our bordem. Thus, we end up eating foods high in fat or simple carbohydrates. Also, such snacks are much more readily available to us. I can stop anywhere and pick up a bag of chips, but when was the last time an American stopped at a vegetable stand to pick up a carrot?

It has more to do with than just healthy eating.

Asians on average eat less than Americans. Have you seen the servings they have? Not restaurants in Chinatown. I mean at home or what you'd see served in a small suburb of Osaka. I ate a serving and was still hungry. So many times in Asia, my friends and I would have dinner and were tempted to order a second dish of dinner. But we were cheap so we didn't.

Secondly, Asia is so much more upbeat than anywhere in America. In America, it's drive here, drive there, walk a tiny bit, eat, sleep. In Asia, it's walk to the station, take the subway, walk to the next station, walk some more to work, walk back home. So much walking. First few days in Asia, my feet had blisters cause I did so much walking compared to home.

Thirdly, most Asians have a strange metabolism and are smaller in body size than most Americans. I pig out at least once a week and I fail to gain weight. I stay the same weight, even if I have a fat streak... it's usually that I'm up by 10lbs and end up losing it the next week anyways.

Americans would not only have to adapt their diet, but lifestyle too. Get rid of that SUV, you're walking to work.

americans are lazy !!! its always the fat b!tch in her SUV who waits idly in the 5th car down at a drivethrough ... the moment she is ready to order at the window, i probably would've have gotten my food paid for and out the door if i were to just park my car and go in. i see cars just line up like crazy at fastfood joints .. most notably at in n out burger ..

Japanese people used to have the highest average lifespan in the world. Not anymore - many believe its associated with the country introducing western food, such as fast/junk food. Kids at school prefer all that nice fried $hit over the traditional healthy foods like sushi etc.

moobie
I think just Singapore/HK/Macau rose above it. Asians just have longer lifespans, period, and better metabolisms on average for processing carbs. Though fat is really bad.

McDs are already in Asia, so u got beat there. You're wrong about the American doctors, they would not want to see u come back, let alone see you come back all fat. Again, you're wrong about the unorganic vegetables, the pesticides and chemicals don't make you fat. They are considered less healthy because those chemicals causes abnormal symptoms overtime.

Asians eat well cause we all health nuts. Almost every other conversation with real Asians is something related to health. Asians also don't believe in butter either.

japanese people also eat little servings throughout the whole day, I dont think they ever stuff themselves in one sitting

Yeah, that doesn't really work in America. It takes my mom 20 minutes to drive to work, she certainly can't walk along the highway to get there. Plus, Americans love suburbia. That means we usually have to drive everywhere except around our neighborhood. America doesn't have much as far as public transportation. And we're not big on trains either. If you want to get to another city, you either drive or take a plane.

And besides, cars are a part of American culture. Cars were first used for recreational purposes, and they also represent freedom. For women, it used to mean that they could get out of the house and do things for themselves. And now for teenagers, they don't have to rely on their parents to cart them around, so they can go pretty much where they want. I'm sure you've all seen those high school movies where people are all proud of their cars, and guys try to pick up girls in them, like Grease, or something.

I personally hate to drive. I want to live in a city where I can live close to my work and can use public transportation. But that's just me.

My point is that it's not just that we're lazy. Though we often are (I know I am).

I would also love to eat more Japanese food, but I lack the knowledge and I don't live near an Asian food market. I'm also a college student, so I eat cheaply. I don't eat fast food a lot, though it would be very cheap. I eat a lot of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, lunch meat, tuna salad, and canned fruit. Oh, and frozen dinners. Yeah, not such a healthy diet...
Aoi_Zora
biggrin.gif hehehehe I'll add my 2 cents about this as well.

About the smaller food portion thingie....I don't really think that's true if you go out to family restaurants. They serve normal/large portions as well. If you eat at home..then that's a different story, portions could be larger or bigger. Japanese people also do eat alot of fried foods....and tend to leave the fat on meats and still do use lard sometimes when cooking. Sodium also is a big problem here. Soysauce, miso and pickled veggies are basics and they are super salty!!!

Tho, on the other hand:
Japanese people eat much much more fish than Americans. Fish here (Japan) is like beef in US. Lots of seafood. Seriously. Lots of tofu, alot of the fruits/veggies/grains in Japan are also better quality I think. Organic or very close to it, because japanese housewives are just 'urusai' about pesticides and healthy issues. Alot of fruit in the US just taste like cardboard to me......(Seriously...you can scan the barcode on veggies packs and look up to see which farm your veggies came from) Tea......everyone here drinks some kind/form of green tea on a daily basis. It's sold in bottles everwhere......so even if you can't or don't like to make it....you can buy tea in liter bottles.
Everyone here has to walk or bike alot...since most people have to use the train. There are also still many housewives in Japan.....since it's a common practice. So of course housewives would be able to cook healthier meals than instant or fast food.
hm....can't think of anymore....but those are the top things that I notice. Plus...in general.....most Japanese people don't like the idea of being overweight....eating alot is something different.....cause there's lots of skinny people who eat alot. Overweight is extremely associated w/bad health....(or at least the people I'm around) so.......
