For the last six years, they have consistently displayed a very high passing mark of 90% and above and excellent track records.

biggthumpup.gif TRIVIA: There are 12 excellent schools of nursing nationwide according to CHED. Only four of them are from Metro Manila and the rest are in the provinces.

love2.gif HISTORY OF PLM COLLEGE OF NURSING

In 1967, a study entitled “Manila-Its Needs and Resources” indicated that despite the physical proximity to the people, the 41 Manila Health Centers had not gained the people’s confidence. The study confirmed the then and now current thinking of health care experts that in order to meet the health needs of the people, health workers must go where the people are – to their homes in the community. Thus, the need for opening a community-oriented College of Nursing at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila was conceived.

When PLM opened on July 17, 1967 many of the enrollees in the 2-year associate in Arts course were prospective nursing students; hence, in the summer of 1969, the College of Nursing was established by the President, Dr. Benito F. Reyes. He then appointed Miss Valentina Patacsil as College Secretary. Under her guidance, 29 students were selected to be the first nursing scholars of the university. On July 1, 1969, Mrs. Mary Vita B. Jackson was appointed Dean of the College of Nursing. Four years later, 27 of these scholars passed the board examination given April 1972 with one of them in the 9th place in the name of Rosalinda Taguiam Palad. Since then, more PLM graduates have distinguished themselves not only as placers in the nursing board examinations, but more importantly as effective nurse practitioners in the Philippines and abroad. To date, CN produced 168 board top notchers and distinguished itself as among the top three college in the field of nursing in the country.

Every year, the college admits students from a selected group taken from among the top graduating high school students in the City of Manila. The students undergo clinical practice at the Hospital ng Maynila, the Philippine General Hospital, other tertiary level health agencies and in selected urban and rural community settings.

Since the establishment of PLM-CN in 1969, it had eight (8) who have given the best years of their lives and for what it is today. Aside from the distinguished name, the college became an inspiration among the students and alumni to uphold the ideals of the college - to render service and reach out the community.

love2.gif LINKAGES, TIE-UPS AND EXTENSION SERVICES

Through these experiences, students are exposed to the realities of life and motivates them to voluntarily work in the aim of helping the people to be more health conscious, socially aware, and self-reliant. At the end, they are given the chance to really feel the pulse of community work.

cool30.gif President GMA cites 'culture of excellence' at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila cool30.gif

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has cited the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) for its "culture of excellence" as she challenged this year’s graduates of the university to continue to be among the topnotchers in the licensure examinations in their preferred courses.

In her speech at the PLM’s commencement exercises held Friday at the plenary hall of the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), the President said that because of its "culture of excellence," it is not easy for a student to go through college at the PLM.

"Hindi madaling makaraos sa kultura ng kagalingan kagaya ng kultura ng Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (It is not easy to hurdle the culture of excellence that is the culture of the PLM)," the President said.

The President said that only those who have excelled in high school are accepted at the Pamantasan, a university funded by the Manila city government.

She said that the PLM is a university for poor but bright students.

The President described as "impressive" the accomplishments of the PLM in licensure examinations for accountancy, engineering, medicine, nursing, physical therapy, law, social work and education.

She mentioned Police Chief Superintendent Pedro Bulaong, chief of the Western Police District, and a PLM graduate, as an example of a "worthy product" of PLM.

Quoting Manila Mayor Lito Atienza, the President said the PLM is among the "top five universities" in the Philippines.

The President also recalled that it was her father, the late President Diosdado Macapagal, who signed Republic Act 4196 that created the PLM, the first university funded by the City of Manila.

biggthumpup.gif Be among the best in the field of nursing in the Philippines and the world!

biggthumpup.gif To pass their entrance exams is one thing but to remain, survive and thrive in a very competitive, challenging and dynamic environment that these four schools have is yet another task!!!

i know it cost more for being a transfer student from another country, but it beats out the price of $6000+ a year price of books, tuition, gas, food money in a california state university i go to right now. plus my parents own a house in manila and my uncle is taking care of it so i can just live with him. also we have another house in bacolod and my dad would love to send me there to do nursing but i wouldnt' want to cause there's way too much people in that house and no privacy and would get noisey.
"Destiny's Child"
u sure about that!? i think youre going to have a really hard time adapting to filipino education especially those stellar, high-caliber schools you're aiming for. in SLU, i had 30 units Mon-Sat from 7 am to 5 pm. if you wanna save, why not go here to Boston? my school offers nursing and its only 100 bucks per credit for in-state. i understand that California really is a wallet-emptier but you just have to tough it out. Forget about school prestige. it wont matter that much. just finish a 2 year nursing program and practice as a nurse. then get BSN while earning close to 30 bucks per hour by working and simultaneously studying at your desired top class school. hope this helps...
Riverdales 27
see the problem about the nursing program here where i live is, its competition. they use to take in 55 students a year with the highest gpa between 8 classes they look at. now its 55 students a semester. and the lowest gpa is a 3.7 to compete to try to get in. its insane. i don't think i can do it.

hospitals complain about low nursing staff but yet won't help colleges out by having nurses become nursing teachrs.

Just a warning. It's not easy getting through this schools. For me, it doesn't really matter which nursing school you graduate back home. I got mine in some mediocre school and still able to get a job in one of the biggest hospital in Chicago.
Riverdales 27
