Six people died after a nursing home in Omura, Nagasaki Prefecture, was gutted by a fire at about 2:20 a.m, Sunday. The bodies of five of the victims--all residents of the facility--have been found in the ruins.
The sixth victim was taken to a hospital, but died later of the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. The three other residents of the facility are all hospitalized in critical condition.
Fuchi was on duty alone and did not notice anything out of the ordinary when she made her rounds at midnight. About an hour later, she went to bed in the staff room and woke a short time later to the sounds of crackling and saw the sofa and other materials near the living room on fire.
