Wife arrested over husband's insurance murder had huge debts
KITAKYUSHU -- A woman, under arrest for teaming up with two others to murder her husband for his life insurance benefits, is suspected of committing the crime to pay debts and for gambling, police said.
Police said Fujita often went to pachineseo parlors and host clubs and bought expensive brand-name goods.
Shortly after Fujita married Akira in October 2003, she began withdrawing cash from her husband's bank account. She also borrowed money as her debts had amounted to several million yen.
After the husband criticized Fujita for spending too much money, and creditors demanded she pay her debts, Fujita apparently talked with the two men about the possibility of murdering her husband.
Only 11 days later, Fujita drove a car with her husband in the front passenger's seat into the sea at Kokura Harbor in Kitakyushu. Fujita managed to get out of the car but the husband drowned.
After learning that Fujita's husband had his life insured for a total of 70 million yen, police began investigating his death.
Shortly before the fatal plunge into the sea, the victim dined with two of the three suspects and drank alcohol. Police suspect that the two people slipped the husband a sleeping drug during dinner.
