Gangster, chef busted for fatally beating man

KITAMOTO, Saitama -- A gangster and a chef were arrested early Wednesday for fatally bashing a man at a crime syndicate office here.

Seiichi Ishikawa, 37, a self-appointed chef, and Tamotsu Yamazaki, 54, a member of a gang, are accused of murder. The name of the victim, who police suspect is linked to the gang, was not immediately released.

"He began to act violently, so we hit him in a bid to suppress him," one of them was quoted as telling investigators.

Officers rushed to the scene and found a 32-year-old man from the city of Kawagoe dead at the scene, bleeding from his forehead.

Ishikawa and Yamazaki hit the victim dozens of times with a piece of lumber at the gang's office in Kitamoto at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, investigators said.
