Helicopters keep eye on children
The Yomiuri Shimbun
Police in Saitama Prefecture are strengthening airborne patrols to ensure the safety of children in an effort to combat an increase in crimes targeting minors.
In one sky patrol that worked in cooperation with police officers on the ground, the police spotted a man who was approaching primary school girls.
Besides trying to protect children, the team cooperates closely with investigators on the ground in investigating violent crimes and other incidents, including hit-and-run cases.
In December, the Saitama prefectural police began intensive patrols around schools in response to the increase in crimes against minors.
Because of these crimes, the "flying squad" started enhanced operations in the southern parts of the prefecture, mainly over Niiza, during the hours when students leave schools for home.
According to the prefectural police, the squad has helped police on the ground in the arrest of two other suspects.
