A few days ago I saw this comedy in TV. There was a Filipina housemaid cooking for her Italian employer. They were arguing about dinner. The housemaid wanted to put coconut in the pasta for dinner. The employer said 'NO!'. She insisted on putting the coconut and make the pasta 'Filipino style'. He said he didn't want a Filipino-style pasta. He wanted non-contaminated, original-Italian pasta. The wife came in and asked what happened. They explained what happened and started yelling at each other again. It was so hilarious. The audience even clapped. Finally the employer told her to go up and clean the rooms and the maid left with an angry face. (hehe I just wanted to share this story cuz it's funny. It's even funny cuz there are thousands of Filipinos all over Rome)
Then the wife went on saying that it's a normal thing to have a western and oriental fusion in food. The stars in Hollywood have their food fused/mixed. I started thinking, the Phillipines = oriental??? Is this true?

The Philippines is in south east asia, and like other asean states, they are within the boundaries of the term 'ORIENTAL'
Even Indonesians are considered 'oriental'

No man.... Indonesians aren't considered oriental... Then why would we have fashion models wearing 'oriental' outfit and labeled 'oriental' if we were? Wouldn't it just be called 'normal outfit'.lolz
Wait, so the Filipinos do consider themselves oriental. I know Indonesians don't...

Don't have to be from Asia to be called oriental. Easternmost province of Cuba is named
"Oriente". Has a different landscapes (mountainous). Best music comes from there. So ppl. from that province in Cuba are "Orientales".
Also, the official name of Uruguay is "La Repůblica Oriental de Uruguay". The Oriental Republic of Uruguay.

i always thought oriental refer to the (far) east asian states
like china japan and korea. basically those from the mongoloid race.
many filipinos seem to share the same skin color as them.
but with bigger eyes. no offense.
but some ppl in germany seem to refer to the (near) east
or middle eastern states like arabia when talking about orientals.
so different ppl seem to have different ideas on what is oriental.

generally it means eastern. usually it refers to east asians. sometims it applied more to nort east asians more than south east asians. but in places like europe where there aren't THAT many asians... oriental = all of us.

I think tsinoys maybe considered to be oriental but the majority of Filipinos are not oriental they are malays. I think we should not even consider Filipinos to be malays just plain Filipinos because the prime minister of Malaysia said that Filipinos are not malays just the Malaysians and Indonesians.

"Orientals" literally mean people from the east. Asia is located in the Eastern Hemishpere, so Asian are considered Orientals. However, when they have made changes on the geographic of every region in the world, "Orientals" is no longer in use because other Asian find it offensive (don't know why). The term "Orientals" is now referred as Asians/Pacific Islanders.

In Cuba, yes, Orientals refer to the people from Oriente province, however, outside Cuba, and put on geographical groupings, they are called "Caribbean"
Same thing with Misamis Oriental province in the Philippines. Two provinces are made of Misamis (Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental). People from Eastern Misamis is called "Orientals" while the people from Western Misamis are called "Occidentals"

This doesn't mean that the people of Uruguay can be called "Orientals" just because the term "Oriental" is in the official name of Uruguay. Uruguayans are in the Hispanic/Latino group, NOT in Oriental group.

hongkong is also claiming to be the "Pearl of the Orient.".

i remember hongkong people singing "
東方之珠" during their return to china.
here's a part of that song:
小河彎彎向南流流到香江去看一看
東方之珠我的愛人你的風采是否浪漫依然
月兒彎彎的海港夜色深深 燈火閃亮
東方之珠 整夜未眠守著滄海桑田變幻的諾言...
while the philippines is (according to the poem of rizal) the "Perla del Mar de Oriente" (Pearl of the Orient Sea)
here's part of that poem:
Adios, Patria adorada, region del sol querida,
Perla del Mar de Oriente, nuestra perdido Eden!
A darte voy alegre la triste mustia vida,
Y fuera mas brillante, mas fresca, mas florida,
Tambien por ti la diera, la diera por tu bien.
En campos de batalla, luchando con delirio
Otros te dan sus vida sin dudas, sin pesar;
El sitio nada importa, cipres, laurel o lirio,
Cadalso o campo abierto, combate o cruel martirio,
Lo mismo es si lo piden La Patria y el hogar...

o·ri·en·tal Audio pronunciation of "oriental" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (ôr-ntl, r-)
adj.
1. often Oriental Of or relating to the countries of the Orient or their peoples or cultures; eastern.
2. Oriental Of or designating the biogeographic region that includes Asia south of the Himalaya Mountains and the islands of the Malay Archipelago.
3. Lustrous and valuable: oriental pearls.
4.
1. Of or relating to a genuine or superior gem: an oriental ruby.
2. Relating to or designating corundum that resembles another stone in color.
n.
ori·ental·ly adv.
Usage Note: Asian is now strongly preferred in place of Oriental for persons native to Asia or descended from an Asian people. The usual objection to Oriental meaning “eastern”is that it identifies Asian countries and peoples in terms of their location relative to Europe. However, this objection is not generally made of other Eurocentric terms such as Near and Middle Eastern. The real problem with Oriental is more likely its connotations stemming from an earlier era when Europeans viewed the regions east of the Mediterranean as exotic lands full of romance and intrigue, the home of despotic empires and inscrutable customs. At the least these associations can give Oriental a dated feel, and as a noun in contemporary contexts (as in the first Oriental to be elected from the district) it is now widely taken to be offensive. However, Oriental should not be thought of as an ethnic slur to be avoided in all situations. As with Asiatic, its use other than as an ethnonym, in phrases such as Oriental cuisine or Oriental medicine, is not usually considered objectionable.

You know during the Spanish era, we are part of the East Indies (East India Archipelago) not Asia that is why Filipinos are called Indios. We were never part of Asia before. The East Indies is now called the Malay Archipelago or South East Asia. So during the Spanish era Filipinos are not Asians.
Then in the 20th Century East Indies, Australia and Pacific Islands were incorporated to Asia. Afterwards Australia and the Pacific Islands became Oceania and East Indies became Southeast Asia.
