Japan has confirmed its 22nd cow infected with mad cow disease.
A 64-month-old milk cow of the Holstein breed in the northern islands of Hokkaido was confirmed last week as the latest victim. The animal was born before Japan banned feeding meat and bone to cattle to prevent infection.
Meanwhile, Tokyo last week halted U.S. beef imports after detecting spinal bone, which is highly susceptible to mad cow disease, in a veal shipment from New York. Japan had partially lifted last month a two-year-old ban on American beef.
