Juz sharing a little about nomadic communities and the challenges they face here. I wonder how they mirror the rural communities in Mongolia. Care to share?

In Kenya, there are nomadic pastoralist tribes still existing...and living out their traditional lifestyle of age group and circumcision rites, cattle rustlings. Examples of these tribes are not juz the famous Masais, but the Samburus, Turkanas, Boranas, Gabbras, Pokots, etc.

Many of these nomadic pastoralist groups have settled down to an agricultural settlement, but they have alot of aid from foreign aid agencies to help them get obtain education, healthcare, and foreign currency. Eco-tourism is a big theme with these folks. But it's not yet hugely developed because of the dangerous conditions they live in - the proliferation of small arms make the traditional cattle rustling a deadly affair these days.

Some of the pastoralists have sent their boys to Texas to learn from the cowboys how to carry out big range cattle ranching. It's not clear if such a business can really revive again in Kenya because land is scarce and the traditional agricultural tribes are moving to take more and more cattle lands and especially water sources.

Some of the nomads, particularly the Masais have left behind their traditional lifestyle to seek a moneyed life in the city. Alot of them end up as lowly paid askaris (private guards for homes) or dressed up Masais for tourists..

Strangely enough, most of the nomad tribes have not been influenced by the local and foreign Christian evangelist groups to abandon their animist faith and become Christinize, like the vast majority of the settled tribes here.

Islam is also not taking root amongst these tribes, except those who are on the border with Somalia perhaps.

What will happen with these fragile communities who are living in a tough environment and willing to stay in it rather than join the comforts and attractions of urban settlements?? The nomads seem to live one day at a time. They don't like to send their children to school, and that keeps them conservative and resistant to change.

In Ulaanbaatar(=RED HERO the capital city) you can find ppl from all over the country. Mostly young ppl 0-40. Old ppl stay in countryside! Young ppl work in UB and send money back or just study. Goverment doesn`t help much.

But there are some communities who still follow their old ways of life.
like TSAATAN(=raindeer) ppl

(Their Culture differs from Mongols -has Turk like language)

I think nomadic culture could not endure this century !
After 100 year it will be just history

So long as there are deserts, steppes and savannahs, I am sure there will always be wandering nomads. Even if they carry satellite phones and have wireless internet connection on their laptops!

I have seen these kinds of yuppie nomads here..!! biggrin.gif

Do you also practice initiation rites to age groups and circumcision ceremonies? Do you have a 'warrior' and 'elders' age group for the men? Howabout multiple wives?

NO circumcision, thank god! (no offence to the African culture)

None taken. Circumcision is practised widely by the Jewish, Muslims, Coptic christians and many countries such as the USA, Philippines and Korea perform circumcisions for secular health reasons.

It's not such a taboo ritual. icon_neutral.gif

Traditionally, Mongols don't do circumcision. But recently in last 10 years, this practice started mainly due to health and hygenic reason.

Circumcision for women is pointless, but for men, it prevents unnecessary complications later in life (like fimosis).. that's the definitive clinical advice. icon_smile.gif

Nomads may have been able to cause problems in the past but thanks to modern weapons, they are reduced to nothing more than memories.

Modern days Mongolian nomads are facing the dilemma of MOVE or SETTLE
Mongolians are no longer pure nomadic people anymore, more correctly say they have semi-nomadic life style.
