Thousands of pigs burn in farm fire

YAMADA, Chiba -- About 3,200 pigs were burned to death early Saturday morning as a fire raged through a pork farm here, police said.

Four of the 21 wooden sties in the Bright Pig piggery in Yamada were razed by the fire that also claimed the lives of the pigs that had been raised for their meat.

Four workers were at the piggery at the time of the blaze, but none were hurt.

Police said that a piggery worker turned up for work just before midnight, noticed the fire and alerted the fire department. The farm has about 17,000 pigs. (Mainichi)
