Man sentenced to 16 years in prison for 14 sexual attacks on young children

FUKUOKA -- A 33-year-old man who molested or raped 14 girls and boys was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Monday.

Haruhiko Kumamoto, from Munakata, Fukuoka Prefecture, took 14 girls and boys in Fukuoka and Saga prefectures to hidden locations . After threatening them with a knife, he molested or raped them, according to the ruling.

The victims were aged between 6 and 10 at the time.

Soichi Hayashida, presiding judge at the court, said that the victims were shocked mentally and physically.

The judge said. "The children suffered mental and physical anguish that could hinder their growth."

In 1990 when he was 17 years old, Kumamoto abducted an elementary schoolboy and killed him in Fukuoka Prefecture. He was given an indeterminate-term sentence between five and 10 years and was released in December 2000. Mainichi)
