Yakitori shop worker grilled for trying to abduct schoolgirl by pretending to be cop

A man who attempted to abduct an elementary schoolgirl by pretending to be a police officer has been arrested, Tokyo police said.

Hideo Ibayashi, 33, a yakitori shop employee from Chiba, approached an 11-year-old girl in his car in Edogawa-ku, Tokyo.

"I am a police officer and looking for a third-year student," he reportedly told the girl who was on her way home from school. "Can you get in?"

Ibayashi fled the scene after a local resident noticed something was strange and yelled out.

Since September 2004, there have been several cases in Edogawa-ku where men have posed as police officers and approached schoolgirls. (Mainichi)
