230 pigs burned to death in Yamagata blaze

TSURUOKA, Yamagata -- About 230 pigs were burned to death after a fire broke out in a pigsty here on Sunday, police said.

Police said the fire broke out in a pigsty next to the home of Genichi Igarashi, 68, at about 11:10 p.m. on Sunday, destroying about half of the two-story building. Some 200 piglets were killed in the blaze, along with about 30 of the 90 adult pigs kept in the building.

Igarashi's family finished work at the pigsty at about 7 p.m. on Sunday and then returned home, police said. (Mainichi)
