Saitama man nabbed red-handed at Nara temple with stolen Buddhist images

NARA -- A Buddhist image stolen from the famous Horyuji Temple has been found in the car of a man arrested for taking an image from another temple here, police said.

On Sunday morning workers at the Horyuji Temple in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, found that sections of lattice broken and a 74-centimeter Buddhist image missing from a room on the temple grounds.

The Buddhist image he allegedly stole from Horyuji was found wrapped in a white cloth inside a car he had hired. Another image Okuma said he had taken from the Akishino Temple was also found there.

"I also committed the theft at the Horyuji Temple," officers quoted Okuma, 43, as saying. "After hiring a rental car, I went to Horyuji, then to the Akishino Temple and then to the Tachibana Temple." (Mainichi)
