Newborn dies after mother given wrong medicine
A newborn baby died at a Tokyo hospital after doctors accidentally gave a pregnant woman, whose baby was in danger of being born prematurely, a medicine to speed up labor, it has been learned.
Metropolitan police have launched an investigation into the exact cause of the infant's death. Investigators will try to determine whether there were any problems with the emergency care administered to the baby after it was born.
Her condition improved and she was released on Sept. 22. However, instead of giving the woman medicine to slow down the movement of her womb, the hospital gave her medicine to speed up contractions.
The woman gave birth at her home three days later. After receiving emergency treatment at the hospital, the infant was transferred to a hospital in the Tokyo metropolitan area specializing in pediatrics, where it died.
