180 years ago after Siam (Thai) ransacked Vientiane, took its people
and settled them in Korat, imprisoned their king in Kroungtheb
(BangKok). Siam used Lao people to build temples, canal, palaces and
many Siam official building around Kroungtheb. They practically are
Siam slave; some of them are starved to death during this period. Their
King Chao Anou has been working as slave among his people. He was very
strong and he was very charismatic, Siam was suspicious that one day
Chao Anou will rise against their power and put him in jail, Chao Anou
died of starvation.
A vast territory, from Khonkain to Ubon and its people around 16-18m
are now called Lao Isan.
Thai government rewrite history book and deny that 1826 holocaust in
Vientiane had happened, Thai government keep Phra Keo and returned only
Prabang to Lao people.
Isan people are the poorest people among Thai ethnic, few Isan people
have a degree from university, and they are bared from working in some
sensitive post in the government. Thai government banned people chewing
betel nut, they destroy all betel nut tree in Korat and another part of
Isan.
Isan is undeveloped compared with another part of Thailand, high
unemployment, each year when the rice season is over around 2-3m Isan
people migrate to Bangkok looking for work in the factories, shop, some
are Tuk Tuk and Taxi drivers. They are considered as second class among
Thai people and have very low wages. Further more some young girls from
Isan are sold for prostitution, 75% of them have been infected with
HIV.
From the past many writers, poet or some intellectual who talk about
the origin of Isan people have been assassinated or disappeared with
any trace.
Local government official in Isan are from the south, they act as a
depression element for central government.
Isan people are fighting for their identity, right to be equal among
other ethnic and to preserve Isan culture and the right to be Isan
people.
The fight is just begun!!!!

Well, Ong Bak and Tom Yam Goong is a good way to start! I thought Ong Bak was honestly pretty good. Tony Jaa looks just like a friend of mine. Moves the same way, too. I guess the way their bodies are built makes them more acrobatic, although my friend is a little darker. Haven't seen Tom Yam Goong yet, tho.

Aeroforce, I am sorry to say this but even you admit that Thaksin (thai PM) is trying to sell the country, why do you think the people are making up stories of Thai stealing whatever from Lao?

Yea, generally they are respectful of the Thai King. Lao, Thai and perhaps kings of the surrounding countries are viewed with more religious overtones. So there is no real disrespect for the Thai King.

At any rate this is all ultra nationalism. Like a fellow from Ghana once said,"We have freedom and democracy but we cannot eat either idealogies", because his country was still very poor, while more strict and authoritarian countries like Malaysia was prosperous. This applies to the Isaan situation as well. The people might not be well educated, but they are not stupid enough to throw their lot in with the state of Laos for purely nationalistic reasons no matter what your history books may say. Bringing up the past won't feed their children. In several generations most of Isaan may well become Thaified. By that time it won't matter.

Anyway, if there really was a secession movement in Isaan, the government of Laos won't want to have anything to do with it. They have enough issues to deal with, and in this day and age those issues are much more important than the nationalistic aspirations of a few guys behind their computers. Even the Malaysian government doesn't want to have anything to do with the current separatist movement in the 3 southern provinces of Thailand. This is the 21st century, things have changed. The Cold War is over. Free market capitalism is now the most powerful force in the world. That is what everyone is preoccupied with, not some irredentist claims. Otherwise Mexico would still be lobbying for the huge territory it lost to the US after the American-Mexican War. The Mexican War did occur some 20 odd years after this :

I think we should all repeat together that Thaksin is a fool. Not only is he corrupt and arrogant, but he acts like a 5 year old baby trying to be a politician. He throws lots of tantrums. Generally he is an embarassment for us Asians. The only thing he has going for him is his massive family wealth, with which he wrongfully uses his political influence to increase. Remember that "megaphone" diplomacy displayed earlier in the year when the refugees from Thailand crossed the border into Malaysia? That was so embarassing to even contemplate. Makes others look at us Asians as if we're amateurs.

I think Mayalsia's PM displays greater political acumen and dignity, although he did partake in that "megaphone diplomacy", but he was also the first to call it off in favour of a more stately approach.

Very powerful thoughts indeed. I could say the same for Kenyans here, they have democracy and free speech but they can't eat either of those as the drought carries on and some 3m pastoralists up north are starving.

Whatever happened to the original king of the Issan people? Was or is he the same king as the Laotian king?

Indeed, but it must be noted in the past tense. The country of Laos has no monarchs. To some Lao people the area known as Isaan is called the 16 lost provinces.

Pra Keo is a very scared Buddha statue to both Lao and Thai. There are two Pra Keo in Thailand. One only for the public and the real one is kept in a secret chamber that only the King of Thailand have access to. Pra Keo has a very long history...the origins of this scared Buddha statue can be traced all the way back to Northern India, from there to Sri Lanka, from Sir Lanka to Cambodia, from Cambodia to Laos, and from Laos to present day Thailand. Basically, all South East Asian(with the exception of the Viets) revere Pra Keo.

I think there are many myths and legends surrounding the Pha Keo, that we may never know the truth of it. This is what PB on AF said about it:

QUOTE
According to legend, the Emerald Buddha was created in India in 43 BCE by Nagasena in the city of Pataliputra (today Patna), but some art historians describe it as belonging to the Chiang Saen Style of the 15th century CE. The legends state that, after remaining in Pataliputra for three hundred years, it was taken to Sri Lanka to save it from a civil war. In 457 King Anuruth of Burma sent a mission to Ceylon to ask for a Buddhist scriptures and the Emerald Buddha, in order to support Buddhism in his country. These requests were granted, but the ship lost its way in a storm during the return voyage and landed in Cambodia. When the Thais captured Angkor Wat, the Emerald Buddha went to Ayutthaya, Kamphaeng Phet, Lao and finally Chiang Rai, where the ruler of the city hid it.

I heard of the "flying" Pha Keo supernatural myth, but it sounds like an urban legend. As much as Santa Clause delivering present to kids on Christmas. Couldn't the "flying" all be fabricated to become a hoax popularized by rural farmers claiming to see flashy green light/object flying through the air. Couldn't it had been some green fireworks setup by Thailand? I believe that Thai news was created by Thai nationalists to distract Lao villagers thinking the statue actually flew nation to nation, blessing it, as it's currently in Thailand now. However, that could be a cover-up for the real reasons Thai stole the scared statute from Laos back then. Just a random thought. lol.
Point_Dexter
^That flying preah keo is also a lame rumor in Cambodia too. Theres even rumors that the real preah keow is still buried in Cambodia.

If there was an uprising in Issan I would not be supprised to see the Thailand send Khmer Surin Soilders up north across the Mung river to fight.

When the Vietnamese encrouched there borders during the invasion of Cambodia, The Thai officials dipatched Khmer Surin Soilders and supplied the Khmer Rouge. The Thais will never fight head on using Thai soilders. They will sacrifice the minorities first.

If Issan uprises, and Surin does the same, there could be a chance for independence. The Malays are at the verge of doing so.

I love to see Lao get its own country back from vietnamese first.
How many vietnamese in Lao?

Some peole love to see conflicts. SOme people want to live in peace.
Some people smart. Some people just too stupid.

And sure if there is any war between Lao and Thailand. Issan soldiers will be there to kill the enemies. Do you think Thailand and friends will give in easily to Lao?

Some of you guys just to stupid to understand what really going on in This World.

I dont see much future of Lao if it is not able to produce better human resources.

See vietname for example , vietnameses from oversea are coming back to help the mother land. They working hard toward peace and wealth. In very near future vietname will be among the top of Asia. Consider vietnames was te enemies for both China and the US. But both country are investing in vietname.

Look at Lao. Lao is still recieving donations. One source of income rely on selling the enegy to Thailand. Is there anyone really investing and expecting profits from Lao?

I dont want to come here and b!tching some of you. Just some of you. Very few of you. But if Lao let bad people speak in their name. I dont think that it will be much future in Lao.

I want to listen the the good Lao in this forum. If there is any.

AnAttA, Thailand is richer than Laos, there is no doubt about that. But look at your society in general. Look at the crime rate. Look at the prositiution. Look at the corruption in the monkhood. The list goes on.

Laos is poor overall, but the individual lao people is not corrupt in heart. The individual Lao will not rob and kill you for petty stuff. Can you say that about the average Thai? I don't think so.

There has been much talk about southern Thai Muslims uprising here recently. One thing that hasn't been said though, is that the feelings and sentiments of Malays in Malaysia regarding Pattani is absolutely nowhere near as strong as that of Lao for Isaan. An independent Pattani? Improbable. One that would join Malaysia? Even more so, doesn't even come into the picture. It's all merely boys talk. I'm not pro-Thai, but pro-ASEAN.

Yes. I admit that what you have said is true. He have that problem in our country..
We got crooked cops, corrupted government officials and many other things.

Those problem might remain unsolved for long long time. Some problem will get worse. Everything come with a price. We want a free , modern society where everyone can do everything the want under the same laws. Some people follow the rules, some bend the rules. Some of us doing well, they are rich. Some of us fall behind, they are struggling to get out of the poverty. But there are people in the middle that dont follow the flow. Many people living with what the Buddha have taught. They living peaceful life.

If you live outside Thailand you see Thailand thru media. You know what media show people. They show only problem. I personally invite you to visit us. Live among us. You will learn that we are not that bad as you have thought. Thais people are very tolerant and forgiving. You will know why many foreigners choose to make Thailand their second home depite the problem we have.

I think it's enough to have a conversation with him.
His recent posts show everything. He is not any better than the people he's blaming. Pathetic!!!
He goes around attacking everyone who disagree with him and call "Bak Who Kee", including me. He seldon contributes anything to the threads.
And I thinks he will name me "Bak Who Kee" again after this post.

Should I report to the Mod?
PS. What does "Bak Who Kee" mean? I don't feel anything cos I don't understand it.  laugh.gif

Don't put down Lao people because of an uneducated and insecure Lao person. By doing so, you would let yourself go down with him. And you will lose because he doesn't seem to care about his reputation.

"Buk hoo kee" means "You a$hole" (sadly, he seems to talk about himself).

555 hahaha ,thanks for clarification. laugh.gif

Now, I see.
Hoo = Roo in Thai

Buk and Kee, I know their meaning. icon_wink.gif

I never look down on Lao people.
I admit that I sometimes made fun of people with Lao accent when I was young, but not anymore. I think it's the same that some Americans find southern accent funny to their ears.
In my company, there are numbers of people from Isan and Lanna (Northern Thailand), from Engineers to Geologists to Maids. We get along well. They even teach me how to speak Lanna dialect (very close to Lao) and to write my name in Lanna script.

I think he's funny because of this..

"Even with the Buddha's teaching, the heart of Khon Thai is still black. The Buddha said in his teachings, people who like to look down on other people is the sign of a very low person."

It seems like he tried to teach himself.
That crake me up.
