Mother held in slaying of daughter's schoolmates

02/18/2006
The Asahi Shimbun

NAGAHAMA, Shiga Prefecture--A woman was arrested Friday on suspicion of fatally stabbing two 5-year-old schoolmates of her daughter while driving them to kindergarten, police said.

A passerby called police around 9 a.m. Friday after coming across a boy and a girl lying and bleeding in an area filled with rice paddies.

Each child had been stabbed about 20 times, police said.

The girl, Wakana Taketomo, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at a hospital. The death of the boy, Jin Sano, was confirmed around noon.

"I stabbed the stomach of the girl and threw her out of the car. Then I stabbed the boy, and threw him out of the car.

Police suspect the woman stabbed Wakana and Jin, then fled from the scene with her daughter toward Otsu.

According to police investigators, Wakana was found lying on her back on a path, while Jin was on his side in a nearby ditch.

Bloodstains and a 20-centimeter knife on a cardboard box were found inside her car, police said, adding that she was arrested immediately after she admitted to stabbing the children.

Recent attacks against children, including the slayings of two girls walking home from elementary school, have prompted schools to tighten security and increase patrols to look out for suspicious characters.

Update:

The woman arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering two kindergartners in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, told police she held a grudge against neighborhood parent groups that escorted children to and from kindergarten.

Zheng Yongshan, 34, a Chinese national whose 5-year-old daughter was a classmate of the victims, allegedly stabbed Wakana Taketomo and Jin Sano, both 5, in a car and abandoned their bodies on a street and in a nearby ditch after passing Kamiteru Kindergarten where she should have dropped the children off.

Zheng began complaining to her husband of insomnia several days before the incident, and police suspect she was severely mentally unstable. The police will discuss Zheng's mental health with the Otsu District Public Prosecutors Office to see if a psychiatric test should be conducted after sending her to prosecutors Sunday.

The woman was quoted as telling the police that she was going to kill everybody except her daughter Friday morning.

Although she has remained ambiguous about her motive, Zheng said she was unhappy about the group escort system. The police believe such an attitude may have driven her to murder the children.

She began participating in a parents group that escorts children to and from the kindergarten when her daughter entered a class for 4-year-olds in April. However, she sometimes escorted children even when it was not her turn and sometimes took only her daughter without telling the other parents. After talking to kindergarten authorities, Zheng decided to personally take her daughter to and from the kindergarten until the end of August.

Zheng reportedly told her neighbors that she did not understand Japanese and could not get along well with other parents. However, she began participating in the parents escort group about a month later. She reportedly did not complain about participating in the group.

She became mentally unstable and she received treatment since September 2003. She discontinued the treatment in October last year.

Her husband said she appeared to have been unable to sleep for several days before the murders.

The police suspect Zheng felt isolated because she could not communicate well with mothers of the other children.

School assesses impact

Kamiteru Kindergarten held an emergency meeting for its faculty Saturday morning to discuss methods to escort children to and from the kindergarten starting Monday. It also held a meeting with members of the parent-teacher association to discuss future measures, including how parents can cooperate with each other.

The Shiga Prefectural Board of Education sent five clinical psychotherapists to the kindergarten where they advised teachers about how to take care of children.

The Nagahama Municipal Board of Education decided that parents of children at 10 kindergartens except Kamiteru Kindergarten in the former city of Nagahama will individually take their own children to and from the kindergartens for now on. At three other kindergartens, parents will escort their children to and from kindergarten by buses operated by the kindergartens or on their own. The former city of Nagahama was merged with Azaicho and Biwacho on Monday.

The Nagahama municipal government began offering a telephone counseling service Saturday to help residents shocked by the incident.

The woman arrested Friday on suspicion of murdering two kindergartners in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture, has told police she thought her daughter had been isolated at the kindergarten because other children shunned her.

Zheng Yongshan, 34, was quoted as saying, "I thought my daughter couldn't make friends with the other children at the kindergarten because of them."

Zheng was sent to prosecutors Sunday. A joint wake for the two victims held at a funeral hall in Nagahama on Sunday evening was attended by about 400 people.

She told the police she stabbed to death Wakana Taketomo and Jin Sano, after picking them up in her car to take them to Kamiteru Kindergarten on Friday because her daughter's situation would have otherwise become hopeless.

According to the police, there is no evidence Zheng's 5-year-old daughter was shunned.

The police suspect her belief that her daughter was being given the cold shoulder led her to hold a grudge against children in her neighborhood who were part of the car pool to and from the kindergarten. Zheng told the police the other children were always quiet in her car, and she thought her daughter was not getting on well with them.

Zheng's daughter was in a car pool of four children with the victims and a 4-year-old boy. She reportedly worried about her daughter's relationship with her classmates whenever she took the children to the kindergarten.

When the car pool was introduced in spring, Zheng demanded that the kindergarten let her drive her daughter to the kindergarten alone as she wanted to see how her daughter was doing.

From May to August, the kindergarten gave Zheng permission to do so.

This happens because Japanese nationalists are racist towards non-Japanese Asians and non-Asians in general.

Murder of 2 kindergarteners in Shiga a hot topic on Chinese bulletin board

QUOTE
BEIJING -- The murder of two kindergarten children in Shiga Prefecture has become a hot topic on a Chinese news site's bulletin board.

Many of the messages placed on the People's Daily Online bulletin board on Japan-China relations criticized Japan's "closed society" for excluding foreigners.

One of the readers pointed out that the suspect, 34-year-old Zheng Yongshan who is married to a Japanese man, was not able to adapt to Japan's society. "Japan's society stubbornly refuses to accept foreigners."

"I suspect that terrible discrimination against her led the woman to commit the murders," one opinion read.

Other comments about the incident take a more calm approach.

"This sort of incident could occur in any country," one of them said.

Child killings turn spotlight on Chinese wives in Shiga

QUOTE
NAGAHAMA, Shiga -- The fatal stabbing of two 5-year-old children by a Chinese woman in Nagahama has placed Chinese women coming to live in the area at the invitation of marriage brokerages in the media spotlight.

Zheng Yongshan, 34, who was arrested over the stabbings, came to Nagahama, a city wedged between Lake Biwa and the Ibuki mountains, after meeting her Japanese husband through a marriage brokerage.

Many Chinese women who have married Japanese men under similar circumstances live in the area. However, the cultural differences between China and Japan have been seen as source of stress for many women.

Zheng came from a farming village in China's Heilong Province. Investigators said she met a 47-year-old Japanese man in China after exchanging letters and photographs through a marriage brokerage. They held a wedding ceremony in China and in August 1999 Zheng entered Japan as the Japanese man's spouse.

One of Zheng's friends said Zheng told her she had met her husband after talking with a group of about five or six Japanese men.

An orange sign advertising "Marriage Offers" is just one trace of the marriage brokerage business in Nagahama. It belongs to a brokerage that paired Chinese women from Heilong Province with Japanese men. The business wound down several years ago. A reporter visited the home where the operator of the business apparently lived, but was turned away.

"Reporting isn't accepted here," a person at the residence said.

A source close to the matchmaking business said the market for fees that Japanese men pay to marriage brokerages ranges from 3 million to 5 million yen.

"The cost of the airfares and staying overseas mounts up, but a minimal profit can be made with just 2 million yen," said a marriage broker living in neighboring Gifu Prefecture.

Fuelling demand for Chinese wives in Shiga is the chronic shortage of women marrying into farming homes. There are calls to welcome Chinese women who don't worry about living with their husbands' elderly parents or doing farm work.

But life for these women is not always easy as they want to send as much money and as many goods back to China as they can while their husbands are reluctant to dish out cash.

"In marriages carried out through brokerages, the Japanese man is often in his 40s or 50s, while the Chinese woman is in her 20s and usually from a poor area," says a 50-year-old Chinese woman providing consultation for Chinese wives in Shiga Prefecture. "Besides the cultural differences, the gap between the generations and the standard of living is large."

Some Chinese women reportedly complain that they can't even speak with Japanese parents of children at kindergartens because they don't want to associate with them.

One complaint highlights the problem: "The other parents just turn their eyes away."
