MADISON, Wisconsin -- The last time a 20-year-old college student disappeared in this city, the police led a massive search that cost $100,000 and the national media converged to cover the story.
This time, two police detectives are assigned to the case. The media is paying little attention. And the investigation has yielded few clues three weeks after the student's disappearance.
Some observers say there is one main reason for the difference. The woman who disappeared two years ago was white and attractive. The student who is missing now is male and foreign.
"He's not female. He's not attractive. And that in part is what appears to often come up as a criteria in the way that news media attention gets directed," said Aly Col, who teaches about ethics and diversity at the Poynter Institute, a journalism training center in St. Petersburg, Florida.

I wonder if he was involved in a local religious group, by any chance. I've heard of people missing after getting involved in church groups in the Midwest which actually are cult groups.

Where did you get this information? Back up your sources if you can.
That is pretty upsetting. His family back home must be in a lot of pain right now. Isn't Japan going to do anything about this?

i have to agree that it is outrageous. i do believe that because he's a minority and he's not american that that's why it's not as big of a news.

I think it's more outrageous that there was such a large search for a white female than the fact that not much is being done for this foreigner.
He'll show up on a milk carton someday, just like all the other people who's search doesn't get money thrown at it.
White, non-white, and foreign alike.

It's called "pretty white girl syndrome." Men disappear all the time and hardly anybody cares. The media cares when pretty rich white girls disappear becuase that's what they are: rich and white. People will watch because the girl is pretty.

i remember cecilia zhang (may she r.i.p.) she wasnt white, but i think because she was like 10 or something, it created more of a buzz. plus Chinese people kinda went insane. i was actually told to keep an eye out on any Chinese girls being followed by any suspicious looking man. course i already do that but w/e.
the thing that kinda calmed the Chinese people here down and the worst thing about it was the kidnapper was Chinese. i swear, if that guy ever makes it out, he better not come to Chinatown. he will get lynched in heartbeat.

Perhaps this is some sort of retribution? There was a kid from Wisconsin tha went missing in Hokkaido.
