Full Version: What's up with the word 'Gaijin'?
Asia Finest Discussion Forum > Asian Culture > Japanese Chat
yonsama
I'm not sure if this belongs in here or not but throughout the years I've been noticing that many anime/manga/japan fanatics in America love calling themselves 'gaijins'... I know it means 'foreigner' but what the heck is so proud of calling themselves 'Gaijins'? I open up pages of Newtype USA and I see ads of websites selling shirts with the words "Looking for Japanese girlfriend", "Hen na Gaijin"(?), etc... and I've seen a couple of peopel around my school wearing these shirts.

Why is it that us anime 'otakus' love calling themselves Gaijins? I go to forums dealing with jpop culture and I'll usually see someone with the username with gaijin in it.

Its the Japanese word for "foreinger"
yonsama
^Yes, I already wrote that in the post.
Takashi
It's like when otakus go around trying to incorporate random japanese words into their sentences......its so damn annoying.
Makeshift Universe
"Henna gaijin" means "strange foreigner". A henna gaijin speaks the language fluently and knows more about Japan and its culture/history than most japanese. He knows the rules of bowing, how to behave in different social situations and how to address the boss or the janitor correctly.
In case you didn't know.

actually, it means

OUTSIDER

actually, Japanese people like outsiders/foreign people not getting their culture. Otherwise they would have made a 'Hai' a real 'Yes, and a real Japanese 'no for a real 'no'. or learn better english.

Japanese love to see outsiders/foreign people to gross out when they eat natto, and when those foreigners actually like the stuff, the japanese are kind of disappointed.

Then when you ask them to pronounce all the words they're saying they often say it in some distorted americanized version.

this isn't the only time people called themselves words that others used for a sort of negative conontation though. some girls call themselves sluts readily.

What's funny is that otaku was quite an honourable title to be granted in the past. Donald Richie, an expert on Japan, was called otaku when he visited remote parts of Japan because he was regarded as an enthusiast of Japanese culture/language by the locals.

Ever heard of "Gaijin Hunters"? i.e. 外国人-hunters... icon_smile.gif

There are quite a lot of them, particularly girls, scattered around Asia... But in Japan, there is actually a popular term for it.

yeah, I don't see why people are so proud of using ONE word in a different language, especially when it's OBVIOUS that they know little else....

If you're going to bother writing "hai," then at least learn the word for "Japanese 'no.'" ("iie," by the way)

You are exactly the kind of white obsessive waste of oxygen that I looked down on when I was still in Canada.
Except that you're not white.
And I don't think from Canada, either.
But the personality seems the same as theirs.

Asshats like them make people look at foreigners like me (who are genuinely interested in foreign cultures) with mistrusting eyes.
There should be laws against idiot conventions.
Sure, this would cripple anime conventions in North America (at the very least), but fat forty-year old men shouldn't be dressing up as cartoon women, anyway.
It (should be) disgraceful to themselves, and it also casts a large shadow on the people who spend time making quality cosplays, and looking good doing it.

no, you d!ckhead, japanese sometimes/often say 'hai' when they mean 'no'.

I'm well aware of that.
Read what you wrote.

Otherwise they would have made a 'Hai' a real 'Yes, and a real Japanese 'no for a real 'no'. or learn better english.

Did I say "hai" translates directly to "yes" in all cases?
No.
I just laughed at you for not knowing the Japanese word "iie."

外人 - in Japanese. :p Oops. Can't help it - too similar to get it confused. :p

Besides.. that wasn't gaiGOKUjin... Goku would be written in Traditional.

It's also funny that you say they should "learn better English" when you're making a comment about the Japanese language.
Language reflects culture.
Maybe it's you who needs to adapt to their customs, ne?

But whatever.
