The number of deaths caused by snow-related accidents recorded since last December rose to 132 on Monday, surpassing the 131 deaths in the winter of 1983-1984, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.
The new figure, reached after authorities confirmed the death Monday of an 82-year-old woman in Hokkaido who fell from her roof while removing snow last week, is the third highest in the period following World War II, the agency said.

The largest number of winter snow deaths is 228, recorded in 1962-1963, followed by 133 in 1980-1981, according to the agency.

By prefecture, the highest number of deaths this winter is the 25 recorded in Niigata, followed by 21 in Akita and 14 in Fukui.
