ASAHIKAWA, Hokkaido -- An elderly man was arrested Monday for setting fire to a warehouse he had previously owned, police said.
Fukutaro Nakayama, 81, of no fixed address, is accused of arson to an uninhabited structure. Investigators are grilling him over the motives behind his crime.
At around 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nakayama poured kerosene on the floor of a warehouse belonging to a sheet metal plant in Asahikawa and torched the structure.
The warehouse had belonged to Nakayama until last year, but it was later seized and sold to the metal plate company through an auction organized by a local court.
His crime was exposed after he told an acquaintance that the warehouse belonged to him and hinted that he set fire to it.
