TSURU, Yamanashi -- About 100 dogs were burned to death at a dog shed here early Tuesday morning, police said.
At around 6 a.m., a fire broke out at a shed owned by a dog breeding company in the Shishidome district of Tsuru, and burned down the structure with a total floor space of some 310 square meters, local police said.
About 100 dogs kept in its shed were burned to death. At the time, the son of the breeding company owner and five of his family members were staying in the residential quarters of the shed to help one of the dogs give birth. They escaped unhurt.
A wood heater was used to warm the dog shed. Police are investigating the cause of the blaze.
