YAME, Fukuoka -- A senior worker died in an explosion at a fireworks plant on Tuesday morning, police and firefighters said.
The storehouse blew up in the Arao Kako fireworks plant in Yame at about 11:20 a.m. Senior worker Kazumasa Yamaguchi, 46, died from injuries he suffered in the fire.
The storehouse had been used to temporarily store fireworks under production.
The company ships fireworks to dealers in the Kanto, Kansai and Kyushu regions. No private homes are around the factory which is surrounded by tea plantations.
"I heard an explosion. I was surprised to see mushroom-shaped smoke," said a man who works for a care-giving facility about one kilometer away.
