A former bus driver's appeal against a life sentence for confining a young girl and several women was turned down at the Sendai High Court on Thursday.
Former bus driver Akira Sugaya, 58, dragged an elementary school girl into a station wagon in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture, on Sept. 11, 2003. He drove the car for about 33 hours before releasing the girl.
During the trip, Sugaya threatened the girl by saying, "I will kill you unless you keep quiet," according to an earlier district court ruling that the high court upheld.
From August to October 2003, he also confined several women in Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures. Sugaya said during the hearings that he was with one woman with her consent and asked for a lighter sentence.
