A local train overran a station in Tokyo by about 160 meters Saturday morning after its driver momentarily thought he was operating a rapid service train that was not supposed to stop there, the railway operator said.

At around 10:10 a.m., a 10-carriage local train bound for Ofuna from Omiya overran the stop position of Nishi-Nippori Station on the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line in Arakawa-ku, Tokyo, by some 160 meters before coming to a halt, East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) officials said.

The train went back to the station and departed five minutes behind schedule. None of its 900 passengers or crewmembers was injured.

"I thought it was a rapid service train and intended to pass the station," the driver was quoted as telling JR East officials. Rapid service trains do not stop at Nishi-Nippori Station.
