Four Cebuano rugby players make it to the national team biggthumpup.gif

Four players from the newly-formed Cebu City Rugby Football Club (CCRFC) were selected to be part of the Philippine rugby team.

Jerry Branzuela, Jehtro Estimo, Noel Flowers and Paulin Padayhag were handpicked by the Philippine Rugby Football Union (PRFU) to be part of the national rugby team, which is scheduled to see action against the national teams of Guam and Pakistan.

The four Cebu players showed excellent form in the recently-concluded Manila 10s Rugby Tournament last March 25 -26 at the Nomads Sports Club, in Merville, Paranaque.

Despite being only a seven-month old team, the Cebu Dragons reached the semifinals of the Manila 10s. They were beaten by the veteran-laden Tequila Mockingbirds team of Hong Kong in the semifinals.

Manila 10s

The Manila 10s tournament had 32 teams from 17 different countries. Five of the teams are from the Philippines: Cebu Dragons, Alabang Eagles, Philippine Air Force, MAAP and Nomads.

Another Cebu Dragons player, forward Dennis Pantaleon was voted as the Most Promising Young Player of the tournament.

Of the four Cebuanos, Branzuela and Flowers have the most rugby experience as they both grew up playing rugby in South Africa and Australia, respectively. Padayhag is no rookie in the field of rugby either as he was part of the Philippine national rugby team which won the gold in the last Southeast Asian Games.

While Estimo had represented Cebu and the Philippines in various powerlifting events. Estimo co-holds the Philippine record for the dead lift.

Training

The four Cebuanos will fly to Manila this month to begin training with the national squad to prepare for the series of test matches starting with Guam in May.

The CCRFC holds practice sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sandtrap, along Ma. Luisa Road in Banilad, Cebu City. For inquiries regarding the sport and club sponsorship details, please contact Jerry Branzuela at 422-9656 or 09266916490.

Philippine National 15s Squad Announced

The selection panel have chosen the following squad of 25 players for the Guam Test match on 20th May 2006.

It will be decided tonight whether we will travel with 25 or with 22. In the event that it is 22 the last three on the list will be on standby in case of injuries, failure to obtain visas etc. Of course, with over 2 weeks to go before the match there could be all manner of reasons why some players may not travel and therefore those who have not made the squad should not lose heart and should keep fit.

The board of the PRFU would like to congratulate those selected and know that you will make every effort to be prepared for the game and once on the pitch will perform to your highest levels both as individuals and as a team.

Please note the squad list was updated on 11th May 2006

Guam looking to improve international record Saturday

By Akash Shringi
For Pacific Daily News

First it was India, now it's the Philippines.

Nearly a year after tying India 8-8 in its first-ever rugby international test match, Guam will get a chance to compete against another international team.

So what does Guam need to come out on top this time around? "I think the Philippines' team will come out very strong -- just like how Guam did in its international test match debut against India," Guam captain Robb Malay said. "For us to win, really, we just need to stick to our own patterns. We also need to work on all the little things in practice to fine-tune ourselves for Saturday's game. I think everybody improved from last year's game. The good thing is the guys now have a significant understanding of the game." Win or lose Saturday, Guam will travel to Manila next month to face Pakistan. That game is scheduled for June 7. Right now, Guam is ranked 82nd in the International Rugby Board world rankings; the Philippines and Pakistan are unranked.

"The Philippines is very similar to Guam, with a mix of experienced expatriates and younger local Filipino players," said Stephen Grantham, president of the Guam Rugby Football Union. "They do not get much opportunity to play as a national squad, and this will be their first full international match ... they will need to control the ball in the forwards and then use their speedy backline to score the points."

Fiji native Peniasi Uluiviti is the head coach for the 22-member Guam team. Among the 22 players, there are 12 returnees: John Arceo, Kristian Berg, Leonard Calvo, Vinson Calvo, Paul Claros, Tim Clements, Steven McManus, Malay, James Oelke, Brett Railey, Steven Sablan and Chris Sgro. The nine first-timers are Andrew Artero, Paul Eustaquio, Junior Haro, Eric Kelly, Conrad Kerber, Vern Lokeijack, Jared Quichocho, Mike Rothermich and Tim Wendon. Eddie Calvo, the 22nd member, was supposed to play against India last year but suffered a leg injury."

We've started training together for about over a month now," Uluiviti said. "We've been good, but we'll see how good we are on Saturday. This team has a mix of older players and young ones. One of our goals here is to protect the future development of rugby."

The coach is inviting the entire island to come out and support the Guam team.

"And I'm sure it'll be a great game," he added.

GOOD LUCK TO THE PHILIPPINE VOLCANOES in GUAM!!!!

The Philippine Volcanoes Rugby Team have arrived in Guam today (Friday 19 May) and will be the FIRST Philippine 15-a-side Team to play Rugby in an International game organised and sanctioned by the Asian Rugby Football Union and the International Rugby Board. Its part of a Triangular Series between the Philippines - Guam - Pakistan

The Philippine Volcanoes are ready to take on Guam on Saturday 20 May at 2 pm Philippines time (4 pm in Guam).

I have been at every training session and seen the improvement in fitness and teamwork over the recent weeks. The squad has coalesced from a bunch of guys from all the clubs all over the Philippines - Nomads, Makati Chiefs, Alabang Eagles, MAAP and Cebu Dragons - to a well-drilled squad who are up for the game. I am sure of that.

And once they all put on the Blue, Red & White Philippine Rugby Football Union Jersey and walk onto the field they will feel like a TEAM and want to win that game for the honor of Philippines.

IRB rules allow that Filipino Nationals, those with Filipino lineage (whether living overseas or not) and expatriates with at least 3 years residency in the country are eligible to represent the Philippines. As a result, the squad of 22 is 50% Filipino and 50% expatriate, which is a fantastic achievement as many of the young local guys have only been playing the game a year or so. So the Philippine Rugby Football Union - presided over by Admiral Eduardo Santos (Retired) - has selected a squad with a mix of age and experience plus youth and vitality. Hopefully a perfect combination!!

The squad is: Romain Barberis, French – CAPTAIN; Carlito Abono, Filipino; Jeff Betinol, Filipino/Canadian; Jerry Branzuela, Filipino; Jerry Echter, Dutch; Tom Egerton, Australian; Brian Feldcamp, American; Noel Flowers, Filipino; Chris Hartley, Australian; Charles Jarvis, Filipino/NZ; Clay Luraschi, Filipino/American; Sean Redpath, British; Evans Maina, Kenyan; Dean Nelson, South African/Dutch; Paulin Padayhag, Filipino; Chris Hettell, Filipino/Australian; Alvin Sandiego, Filipino; Eric Savina, French; Max Stewart, Australian; David Thomas, American; Carlos “Horse” Reporas, Filipino; Rener “Brutus” Echano, Filipino.

The team management group are: Phil Gittus, British – Team Manager; Mike McMahon, Australian – Head Coach; Matt Cullen, Australian – Asst Coach; Jay Savage, American – PRFU Board Secretary.

After Guam, the game for the Philippines against Pakistan will be played at Nomad Sports Club, Merville Subdivision, Paranaque. Metro Manila on Saturday 10 June 2006. That will be the final game of the Triangular Series. Earlier in the same week, on Wednesday 7 June, there will be a game between Pakistan and Guam which will also be played at Nomads Sports Club. The Philippines will also have the honor of hosting, for the first time, the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) mid-year meeting for all the 28 member unions from all over Asia. Delegates will come from as far afield as Kazakhstan to the West, Japan to the North, Indonesia to the South and Guam to the East and they will all be watching the Philippine Volcanoes play on their home soil.

These games and the ARFU meeting have taken a year to set up - starting at the mid-year ARFU meeting in Guam last June - but the efforts of the PRFU are now bearing fruit and we are now achieving international status and IRB recognition.

From all of us here

GO VOLCANOES!!!!

When you pick a name for a National team it needs to be significant. The Name chosen for the Filipino National team has historical significance check out this site:

http://www.militarymuseum.org/Filipino.html

The team was named after Calfornia's Filipino Infantry Battalion & Regiments formed during WW2. It was chosen to reflect the courage of the Filipino in the same vein as the Filipino War Veterans who fought in WW2.

The PRFU emblem is exactly the same as the Infantry units, but the colors have changed to reflect the colors on the Philippines Flag so the yellow background is now blue the stars are the same & the lava flow is red. The Volcans & eruption clouds remain the same as black. Above the emblem is the word Philippines & below the emblem Volcanoes.

So MATE before commenting negatively on a Filipino National team name it is common courtesy to first ask the meaning behind the name. A name for a National representative team is never chosen lightly it needs to have significance to the History and Culture of the country.

Hopefully this history lesson has enlightened you on a part of Philippine history that is very important to a lot of Filipino WW2 veterans.

Philippines hangs on to beat Guam

By Akashi Shringi: For Pacific Sunday News

The Philippines fared well in its international test rugby debut.

The Philippines team – made up of mostly experienced expatriates – gave it all it had in an 18 -14 win over Guam in an international rugby match yesterday at the Wettengel Rugby Field.

The Philippines took a 5-0 lead early in the game when Dean Nelson scored a try. Guam responded six minutes later and took a 7-5 lead. Guam’s Paul Eustaquio broke loose on the far side before flipping the ball to speedster Steven Sablan who scored the try. Vinson Calvo made the free kick to give the home team the lead.

The Philippines, however, came back over the game’s next 40 minutes and scored 13 consecutive points to take a commanding 18 – 7 lead.

Clay Luraschi gave the Philippines a 10-5 lead after scoring a try on an assist from Jeffrey Bentinol. Tom Egerton missed the free kick, but he made one later in the game after a Guam penalty. Egerton made the field-goal-type kick to give the Philippines its biggest lead of the game at 18-7.

Guam, playing with growing desperation, made a short rally and almost won the game.

First it was Fijian David Vuniwaqa who scored on a straight-run try to trim Guam’s deficit to 18-12.
Nineteen-year old Jared Quichocho was successful on the kick attempt, and all of a sudden it was an 18 – 14 game.

With less than a minute left in the game, Guam found itself above 10 yards away from another try. But Evans Maina stole the ball with 19 seconds left in the game to secure the win.

2nd international match on Gauam
This is the second year in a row that Guam has hosted an international test rugby match. Last year, Guam played its first World Rugby Cup qualifier against India at Wettengel. The game ended in an 8 – 8 tie.

Listen, who exactly is this "WE" thing won?

It aint no frigging filipino team as long as you got those imports who in my mind are just another bunch of rejects who could'nt play for their own national team and so find some stupid back door for them to play the game. Its ridiculous!!!!!.....

Field me a team of 100% Filipino brothers then maybe we could be proud of them, before then refrain from using this "WE" cuz your all in this game yourselves and dont necesarilly represent the Filipino theme.

Mate being a California unit made up of Filipinos they are as much a part of Philippines history as that of California.

Clay http://www.villagelions.org/apintwith/clayl.php who scored the 2nd try in the game is Californian and going to the Philippines to play for the National team is the first time he has ever visited the Philippines.

Now he scored a try for the Philippines and is Californian is he a part of Philippines or Californian Rugby history or both. I think both mate.

Lions Winger Tapped for Philippines National Team
* Clay Luraschi heads to Manila on May 11 to represent the Philippines national team in their first-ever test match. The speedy Lions wing will train with the squad for a week, then travel to Guam for an international match on May 20th. Read more...</
4/08/2006
"It's a tremendous honor to be selected to play in the Philippines' very first international rugby test match,” comments Luraschi. “Not only am I extremely excited about meeting the other players, but I am just as excited about visiting the Philippines.”
American-born Luraschi, who’s Filipino/Italian, will be visiting the Philippines for the first time. He popped up on the national team’s radar screen after a Filipino rugger read an interview with Luraschi on the Lions website, then passed the info on to the Philippine Rugby Union. The union contacted members of the U.S. rugby community who were familiar with Luraschi’s skills, and he got the call.

BTW the highlighted part is referring to me. I surf the net and post in over 50 other forum sites around the world to encourage Rugby playing Filipinos in the diaspora to make contact with the PRFU. So they can be a part of Philippines as well as their country of origins Rugby history.

I myself is a Filipino-Australian who has not been back to the Philippines for 26 years and I don't feel any less Filipino doing so.

I have lived in Australia for 30years - because I am not Aboriginal or of Anglo-Celt extraction am I less Australian because I was born in the Philippines.

PRFU numbers as of 23/01/2005

No. of clubs 12
Pre-teen male players 50
Pre-teen female players 20
Teen male players 200
Teen female players 100
Senior male players 150
Senior female players 10
Total male players 400
Total female players 130
Number of registered players 150
Number of referees 6

These are the hard facts of the Rugby scene in the Philippines. Many of the white people that you are berating have called the Philippines home for years, the majority of them are married to Filipinas - their children are of Filipino - heritage. They have spent a lot of their time on a volunteer capacity teaching Rugby Union to Filipinos who have only started playing the game in significant numbers since 2003.

This men under IRB international regulations qualify to play for the Philippines because they have lived in the Philippines for at least 3 years - and Mate the bulk of this players have lived in the Philippines for much longer than that and it is they who have introduced, expanded and developed the game in the Philippines they have every right to be in the National team. If it wasn't for them there would be no Rugby Union in the Philippines - keep that in mind.

I do share your frustrations though that this is not a 100% local and overseas Filipino and Filipino-heritage team but the PRFU was only created in 1998 and Filipinos locally have only been playing the game in some numbers since 2003 - some pragmatic realism is needed here.

Now the Guam team:

The Guam Rugby Football Union is pleased to announce that the following players have been selected to represent Guam in the International Test match against the Philippines on May 20, 2006 at Wettengel Rugby Field in Dededo:
Leonard Calvo, Tim Wendon, Steven McManus, Junior Haro, Vern Lokeijack, Mike Rothermich, James Oelke, Brett Railey, Conrad Kerber, John Arceo, Robb Malay (Captain), Andrew Artero, Steven Sablan, Jared Quichocho, Vinson Calvo (Vice Captain), Tim Clements, Chris Sgro, Paul Claros, Eric Kelly, Edward Calvo, Paul Eustaquio, Kristian Berg

I can see Filipino names in the team are they any less Guam nationals because they are of Filipino-heritage.

With such a small playing pool our first National team made up of almost 50% Filipino-heritage players is good enough for me. In the near future hopefuly this will be a 100% Filipino-heritage team.

I think the name you guys should adopt is the name "Filipino wannabie's".... embarassedlaugh.gif

Im sick of all these fu-king colonials putting their noses where its really not needed.

The-Foreigner please check out my Friendster site for a pictorial history of the development of the Philippines National Rugby team since it was first formed in November 2004.

http://www.friendster.com/user.php?uid=20171128

I did share your view in November 2004 when only 2 Filipinos were in the National squad Paulo Campilo the Scrum-Half and Captain & Jasper Ching. Paulo has now moved on to a new job in Indonesia last year.

But in our first overseas outing in the Kowloon 10s in March 2005 there were 4 Filipinos in the team, Carlito "Arlo" Abono, Marlon Madrazo, Ching Jasper, Eliver "Monkey" Paradero.

In the SEA Rugby 7s game last December 2005 which was an official site sport for the SEA games it was a 100% U-23 Filipino-heritage players
• Michael Letts
Captain
• Jake Letts
Vice-Captain
• Alvin San Diego
Vice-Captain
• Dennis Aboniawan
• Edwin Angelo
• Herbert Baldemor
• Carlos Barbadillo
• Ricky Gonzalez
• Charles Jarvis
• Jean Kim
• Mark Kochanneck
• Michael O'Friel
• Paulin Padayhag
• Elmer Pagente
• Eliver Paradero
• Michael Sanchez

What disappointed me more here that this 100% Filipino-heritage team did not get any local media coverage in an official site sport being played in the Philippines. That was left to Indonesian and Malaysian media.

The Guam match I've already provided the team in my first response to you.

In a space of 2years we have gone from the 1st National team with 2Filipinos to our 1st test match team with 10 Filipino-heritage players not bad I think.

Now regarding some of the "Whites" you have berated. Romain the current Captain is French I hope you have clicked onto the photos and searched further into his other photos. His wife is Filipina, his son of mixed blood. His photos are of family and holiday life in the Philippines. I'll never forget the email I read from him last Christmas when he and the family were on holidays in France - he couldn't wait to get back "home to the Philippines - even with all the coupes etc". His heart is in the Philippines not France.

Now Rick Hartley our first National coach, check out his company site:

http://www.rjhconsultancy.com/about/index.htm

go to the gallery section with the Rugby Team photos. Rick is responsible for setting up the 1st all Filipino Rugby team. Check out the photo of Father & son you can tell he is married to a Filipina. His roots are now Filipino, his family, his home, his business are all in the Philippines. When I hear him talk he says "we Filipinos" he sees himself as Filipino. You would have been proud of him during the team naming ceremony just under 3weeks ago I won't quote what one of my friends told me who just missed out in being selected to tour but he told the rest of the PRFU that there needed to be more Filipinos in the team - Mate in the near future I know there will be.

I know there are a lot of "D--k head" whites etc in the Philippines but don't brush all over them with the same stroke.

I noticed you are from California. I live in Sydney - I work as a Social worker with predominantely refugee and migrant youth I feel, see and experience racism every day of my life as I take for granted you have.

But I felt compelled to reply to your post again because I also read racism in your words. I have lived in Australia for 30 years I have every right to consider myself Australian of Filipino heritage. As much as some of the Whites (because not all would see themselves as such) in the Philippines National team consider themselves Filipino.

I'm off to work now to tackle the Racism that dominates this country I love and call home. What are you doing today?

New Yorker Luraschi Represents Philippines

Friday May 26 2006

Scored crucial try in victory

Clay Luraschi, who plays wing for the Village Lions RFC in New York, recently was given the opportunity of a lifetime-- and made the most of it. The American-born Luraschi played for the Philippines last weekend in a World Cup qualifier against Guam.

His playing status was questionable after tearing a pectoral muscle at his first training in the Philippines, but he played hurt and scored a crucial try at fullback. The Philippines hung on to defeat Guam 18-14.

"It was such an unbelievable experience,” Luraschi said after returning to New York. “Playing in an international test match is so intense, because you're not just playing rugby, but you're representing an entire country. It was an absolute honor to play for the Philippines and I can't wait to do it again."

Luraschi was discovered when officials from the Philippines Rugby Union were made aware of an “A Pint With” interview with him on the Village Lions website, www.villagelions.org. Luraschi’s nationality (his father is Filipino) is mentioned in the interview.

Pakistan 27-22 Guam, in Manila

Pakistan won a fine match in Manila as brave Guam fell to their second close defeat in a matter of weeks.

The game started with two quick tries to winger Edwood Calro of Guam and then to veteran hooker, Sulman Majeedwain. The difference came from the impressive blindside flanker and kicker for Pakistan, Kashif Khawaja, who converted for Pakistan to take his side to an early 7-5 lead. The game quietened down after this opening spell as the players began to feel the humid temperatures.

Pakistan extended their lead just before half time through number 8, Azmat Khan, exploiting some sloppy defence by Guam from a quick tap. This was converted by Kashif – 14 points to 5 in favour of Pakistan at the break. Guam had several lapses in concentration throughout the match, which cost them three tries and they will also be disappointed by the many unforced errors that let scoring opportunities go begging.

Pakistan put Guam under real pressure in the second half by scoring a try and a penalty to Kashif Khawaja and push the score out to 22 points to 5. However as Guam started to hold their passes and utilise the ball better the game became exciting and with six minutes to go unbelievably the scores were locked up at 22-22 after Guam scored two tries. Guam did, though, miss five kicks at goal, which proved crucial as they had the fitness and displayed the skills as Pakistan tired.

However, on the rare occasion that Pakistan was in Guam’s half, they scored. Big second row Mohsin Khan packed down at number 8 and fooled everyone by picking the ball up from the base of the scrum, giving a small dummy pass and ran 25 metres for what was the final score of the match – 27 to 22 to Pakistan.

Kashif Khawaja was outstanding for Pakistan. The team would be very happy with the win and sets up an interesting encounter against the other unbeaten team in Division 5 – Philippines on the 10 June. Guam would be disappointed with their performance.

Congratulations to all the Volcanoes players you've done yourselves & the nation proud. A credible result against a team with a bigger more experienced pack.

I will post any official reports from the PRFU as soon as I receive it from them.

For all those Filipino-heritage rugby players out there your continuing support is important for the development, expansion and improvement of Rugby Union in the Philippines.

Pakistan finish with win icon_sad.gif

11 JUNE 2006

By Jamie Scott and Jarrad Gallagher, in Manila

Pakistan wrapped up their 2006 Asian Nations Series group five campaign with a well earned 24-3 victory over the Philippines in Manila.

The Philippines had the upper hand in the first half, bottling their opposition up in their own 22 for the opening quarter but Pakistan were able to soak up the pressure.

With half time looming they scored a fine try, wing Arslan Zahid crossing the line. A tight first half ended with the score at 7-3 in favour of Pakistan.

Much improved from their 27-22 mid-week victory over Guam, Pakistan showed strong defence and good organisation and were able to establish territorial advantage, which in turn placed the Philippines under pressure.

Two further tries came for Pakistan in the second half, a second for Zahid and one for flanker Rehan.

Earlier, in Singapore on Thursday, Kazakhstan beat Singapore 29-0.

One day the Philippines will play against Thailand and that's when I know they have made it considering Thai Rugby history and being one of the top SEA Rugby Nations with Singapore.

British Pakistani rugby players, play their part in Pakistan’s historic Test victory

15/06/2006

The above picture displays Rugby star Ikram Butt together with fellow West Yorkshire-based players Rashid Mahmood (Earlsheaton RL), Amraz Hamid (Hunslet Warriors RL), Junaid Malik (Elland RL) and Rehan Mansoor (Old Crossleyans RU) & London-based Shahid Rafiq (Battersea Ironsides RU), after helping Pakistan record their second successful Test victory this time against the Philippines RFU.

It was the first time that Pakistan had been entered into the internationally recognised Tri Nation Test tournament. Along the way the Pakistan Test team created a little bit of history by winning its first ever game against a strong Guam team. To prove that it was no fluke and only with three days to recover Pakistan went on to also defeat a very well organised Philippines team.

Ikram Butt, BARA Director, “We are delighted to play our part in Pakistan’s first ever Test victory. The whole event was an emotional & satisfying experience. It is always an honour & privilege to represent Pakistan. All the BARA players were outstanding and significantly contributed to helping Pakistan become victorious”.

Rizwan Malik, Pakistan’s Head Coach, “The injection of the BARA players into the Pakistani team proved to be the key element to our victories. Their level of skill & experience brought the best out of my players. I look forward to linking up with the BARA players in preparation for the South Asian Games this November in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

it's really good to see The Philippines are making there way into Rugby. Although I do prefer League. Rugby is more internationally recognised so i guess it would be the better option.

Is there a Rugby League comp in the Philippines???

once the interest builds up i really do think the Philippines can make an impact in the World Rugby scene. I've always said if Filipino's dont play soccer they should play Rugby Union/League. everyone tell's me that pinoys are too small, well what about all the 6ft and above in the PBA, PBL and MBA? maybe we wont find the height for the lineout's but im sure we can find good size to build on. Filipino's have speed, agility and the absolut disregard for one's health to play rugby at the international level. I would really like to see a full blooded Filipino side in there.

Keep up the good work mate.

Dangal - totally agree League is so much better a spectator sport, too bad that it sucks in promoting & expanding itself at an International level. AND TOO BAD THE NRL STABBED MY NORTH SYDNEY BEARS IN THE BACK thumbsdown.gif

I'm assuming if you like League you are in Australia - if that is the case please pass on the website to other Pinoys www.prfu.com

The PRFU is in the process of looking for U19 Filipino-heritage players for an ARFU tournament in Taiwan in December when the PRFU send me the letter of request I've asked off them I'll pass it on to you so you can pass it on to any Pinoys that you know that play League or Union.

i miss the bears too, i still cant understand why they did that. i miss the magpies aswell. League is still paying for their mistakes in the past.

yeah one dude would bring a butterfly knife and start hacking when napikon.

At least the Maggies are part of a genuine partnership with the Tigers & the logo actually appears on the combined jersey. The Maggies were always my 2nd favourite team.

I thought it was great last year when the team went to Ashfield 1st to celebrate their Grand Final victory.

The NRL was short sighted when Norths with John Singelton support had the best application for the 16th franchise in the Central Coast & came out with the statement that they were not interested in 16 teams & went behind our back & spoke to the Gold Coast about improving their bid & then declaring them as the 16th franchise.

The Central coast is a Rugby League heartland & deserve a team - MY TEAM THE BEARS. biggthumpup.gif
