I can't stand watching China getting fatter and prouder every single day. I wish Mongolia can catch up real quick. In my opinion, you guys need more population, a cleaner governement, and better education system. The world needs more Mongolians!! For God's sake!! genius.gif

The problem is, look where you're at :

No coasts, which means that you can't really have an export led economy.

QUOTE
Economic activity in Mongolia has traditionally been based on herding and agriculture. Mongolia has extensive mineral deposits. Copper, coal, molybdenum, tin, tungsten and gold account for a large part of industrial production. Soviet assistance, at its height one-third of GDP, disappeared almost overnight in 1990 and 1991 at the time of the dismantlement of the USSR. The following decade saw Mongolia endure both deep recession due to political inaction and natural disasters, as well as economic growth because of reform-embracing, free-market economics and extensive privatization of the formerly state-run economy. Severe winters and summer droughts in 2000, 2001, and 2002 resulted in massive livestock die-off and zero or negative GDP growth. This was compounded by falling prices for Mongolia's primary sector exports and widespread opposition to privatization. Growth averaged about 5% from 2002 to 2005, largely because of high copper prices and new gold production. Mongolia's economy continues to be heavily impacted by its neighbors. For example, Mongolia purchases 80% of its petroleum products and a substantial amount of electric power from Russia, leaving it vulnerable to price increases. China is Mongolia's chief export partner and a main source of the "shadow" or "grey" economy. The World Bank and other international financial institutions estimate the grey economy to be at least equal to that of the official economy. The actual size of this grey - largely cash - economy is difficult to calculate since the money does not pass through the hands of tax authorities or the banking sector. Remittances from Mongolians working abroad both legally and illegally constitute a sizeable portion. Money laundering is growing as an accompanying concern. Mongolia settled its $11 billion debt with Russia at the end of 2003 on favorable terms. Mongolia, which joined the World Trade Organization in 1997, seeks to expand its participation and integration into Asian regional economic and trade regimes.

Mongolia does not need to try chase after China, Japan or other tiger countries.
As you wrote we have to emphasize on education, transparent goverment and sustainable environmental friendly economy.

I personnally do not envy Japanese or Chinese at all, their life is so dependant on others and they don't live full or enjoy life, they are under constant pressure, struggle.

^ you think that's bad, Americans work the most out of all the peoples in the world, and that's to maintain their current standard of living.

^ you think that's bad, Americans work the most out of all the peoples in the world, and that's to maintain their current standard of living.

I did not say that is bad, maybe i have different life style.
Many americans live in debt all their life. Bad credit card, expensive car, mortgage payment, expensive vacation, in general consumerist society. In Europe, Germany, Swiss, there is programm that helps young people to prevent debts. Anyway back to topic
Maintaining standart of living??? Is that goal of life? I don't think so, i wanna maintain my happiness and relationship. It does not mean i reject development, i mean we say "stretch in your blanket"

@ Suijen - They say landlocked nations have it more difficult economically but there are ways around that. Mongolia has rail lines that connect to Russia and China. They also have rivers the Onon and Kerulen which flow into other rivers and via Russia and China go into the Amur river and out to Sea. They might be able during warm weather and or after improving those waterways to use those rivers. If rivers could be used would need to make them an international waterway like the Parana-Paraguay river int'l. waterway in South America. They could also have at the end of the Amur River a trade free port for there use. Bolivia, who has been using the Paraguay river to get access to the ocean (currently they have big plans to expand use of the river), also controls a trade free port in Uruguay given to them for there use (they have not been using it much). The Amur free trade port is way to go. Or could have a free trade zone in seaport of Vladivostok. Mongolias railway connects to Trans-siberian railway and the Chinese Eastern Railway which have rails which connet to Vladivostok.
Suijen
^ A big problem with that is that means that Mongolia has to trade with its neighboring countries, but if the neighboring countries already produces on its own the same things that Mongolia produces, that means that demand for Mongolian goods will drop. Part of a reason why a coast is so valuable.
islander
^ They don't need to trade so much with there neigbbors. They just need those nations to let them transport shipping containers from and to Mongolia duty free. All containers would go to there free trade zone at a ocean port in eithier Russia or China. Would be good to have one in each nation.
Suijen
^ that seems kind of awkward really, lol.

Usually in such a case, a country would sell to a seller country, which would then export it, i.e. middle-man country.

And if that happened, the middle-man would get a cut of the profits, and since say China and Russia had indigeonous goods like Mongolia's, then Mongolian goods would be at a disadvantage.

That would be very generous from Russia and China, and it would be like allowing your competitor access to your sea ports.
islander
^ But China, Russia and India (transit nations) do it for Central Asian NS, Nepal and Bhutan. These Nations get transit corridor to major markets or cities where they can ship there stuff and free trade zones in some cases.

Should help your neighbors. Anyway don't think China, Russia or India would suffer economic collapse. There economies are huge compared to these nations. Shippers in transit nations would make money. In fact some city ports in China or Russia which are not doing too good or are not used much could experience economic upturn. Example: When things are bad in Bolivia the Chilean port of Arica suffers economically. They are tied to Bolivias economy like it or not.
Found out there are 31 landlocked nations on planet. UN trying to address there problems and the landlocked nations have come together also by organizing discussions which discuss there particular problems.

Mongolia's trade with overseas countries like the U.S. and Korea are on a rapid increase. Much of trade between Korea and Mongolia is done through Russia. Korea's port of Pusan has trade lanes with Vladivostok, which then connects to the TSR.

I don't think Mongolia has a huge problem.
Mongolia has huge amount of natural resources for its small population, as long as it use it wisely like improving education and infrastracture then mongolia can increase its living standards, however in the total size of mongolia's economy will remain small.
islander
@ Suijen - Mongolia could also have a transit corridor to Khazhkstan. Only around 30 miles (48 Km.) separate the two nations. See the following map of Khazhkstan.

what do you mean with "living standarts"?

more big houses? more automobile?
they can do life happy with horses and camels (they don need Oil, car repair shop, garage, and money).

big ressources and small population was never a problem. via versa.

they can use their ressourses very long time and much more better for their nature.

Mongolia is a one of rare places, where you can breathe a continental air without a smoke or other modern "gifts".

mongolia have very good chance to became a good touristic industries and health center for chinese and other tourists. (wild life romantic, forgoten(in China) culture, and life style)

mongolians are poore people but it dont say that they must destroy their nature and sozial lifestyle for more money or for more comfort like in USA or in China.

good expl. for mongolian developmend in the future you can see in Irland, Swiss.(same geografic-political situation)

btw. mongolia need better international airport.
PervertBurger
Maybe this rapid development like china isnt good for mongolia right now.
Mongolians enjoy the technology and like the bright prospects for their country and future but at the same time, tradition and aspects of that tradition are very important to us.

The best thing for Mongolia to do is to take it one step at a time..a steady pace, like Bhutan.

gunfunit! You already posted something I posted in the regular chat section!

But yes, I do want Mongolia to clean up its economy, improve its living standards, and then strive to become an economic powerhouse.

It may take a while, but heck, if war-torn Corea could clean up after being occupied by Japan and after the Corean War, so can Mongolia.

Your time has passed, although the Mongolian Empire lasted only 15 minutes, its not our fault for the failed conquest your forefathers once achieved. Although myth has it Genghis Khan will someday rise again from his grave & lead his people to power once more.

If you look around there are alot of Mongolian descendants all over northern Asia to Western Russia(Uzbek, Krygystan etc.) places like that. They are just not called Mongolians no more for a couple hundred years now.
