You wanna go to Penang, don't you Aero? Try the laksa there... out of this world!
I don't like oxtail soup. icon_redface.gif Gimme som tum anyday.

@sweet: Is there any ingredient that's considered typical in Burmese cooking? Like Thai have the naam pla (fish sauce), Malay have the belacan (shrimp paste).

@AERO: must you tempt us with those food pics? Not all of us are based in SEA you know. It's not as easy to get yummy food just off the roadside here.

If you come to KL and wanna make merit for all those naughty things you've been up to, I'll bring you here. Wat Chetawan. It's not as grand as the wats in Thailand though. icon_redface.gif

Sky Train
malaccan
^Mahboonkrong, I like. icon_smile.gif

If you come to KL, you can choose your tour guide. Malay?Chinese? Indian? At your service. Service with a smile. The smile can mean many things, just like the Thai smile icon_wink.gif

Don't ask them to act in your cucuk films.

Why do you like SkyTrain photos so much? embarassedlaugh.gif
KL's LRT, don't have as much advertisement as Bangkok's.

But once you're in downtown, the Monorail is actually more useful.
charlee
This is going to sound really ignorant, but which city is more developed?

KL or BKK? icon_redface.gif
Viety_Cent
Singapore !
Happy Asian
^Yes, Singapore is developed with lots of skycrapers.

Singapore !

They are beyond Bangkok and KL for sure. And I quite sure that this city is clean embarassedlaugh.gif
malaccan
Heh, KL or Bangkok? I think both are developing quite nicely. But I got more complaints about KL I guess, cos I grew up there and see more things that can be improved on.

True that Singapore's more developed and organised than the two.

The durian-domed buildings to the right are the Esplanade. Very good performances there.

You guys see that piece of land at the left. The whole strip is earmarked for future skycrapers. The skyline's gonna look even nicer in future icon_smile.gif

Lonely Planet's just published its latest 400-plus pages coffee table book called The Cities Book: A Journey Through The Best Cities In The World.

Basically it lists the 200 top cities as ranked by its authors and travellers. I use Lonely Planet a lot, and really liked the book. ASEAN cities which made into the top 200 (with its rankings were):
008: Bangkok, Thailand
023: Hanoi, Vietnam
025: Singapore
041: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
052: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
054: Luang Prabang, Laos
056: Phnom Penh, Cambodia
069: Manila, Philippines
071: Chiang Mai, Thailand
123: Hoi An, Vietnam
129: Yogyakarta, Indonesia
139: Yangon, Myanmar
180: Georgetown, Malaysia

Tony Wheeler, the co-founder of Lonely Planet, added Jakarta as one of 10 ten cities which didn't make the list that he himself would've included.

Just look at Vietnam with three entries! eek.gif
Happy Asian
YAY! Hanoi is higher than Singapore!

For you sweet, I''sacrifice some of the Japanese carps I keep.

For the potluck, Happy can bring some pho, and JMAC can bring balut.

I read in Msian newspaper that AirAsia will start joint ventures in the Philippines and a country in Indochina within the next 18 months. I've got a feeling it's gonna be Vietnam. It already has sister airlines in Indonesia and Thailand (but this is currently problematical, right Aero? icon_sad.gif ) It's really trying to build a pan-ASEAN brand biggthumpup.gif

VietNam is behind but don't underestimate its people, while other countries' growth could "freeze" VietNam's economy could also "boom" like South Korea in the 80s or China at present madcool.gif Either way, VietNam will go forward! biggthumpup.gif

Vietnam aims to double its 2000 GDP by 2010 and become and industrialized country by 2020. Is that feasible?
A target is a good impetus, but I’m more interested in ensuring the conditions to help sustainable and equal development in the medium term. Which position Vietnam will attain in the next 10 to 20 years is not as important as this.

^ this is wat i want
Happy Asian
^Yeah, that part makes a lot of sense.

So that there's absolutely no misunderstanding, the reason I quoted that article was to show that nowadays increasingly individual ASEAN countries are analysed or referred to in relation to its neighbours. You know how things are with the facts and figures, they're always subject to debate and scrutiny.

QUOTE
The sweet flavor and thick texture of durian makes it perfect for ice cream. Use fresh durian if possible.

INGREDIENTS:

* 4 to 6 segments fresh, frozen or canned durian, as needed to make 4 ounces durian paste
* 2 large egg yolks
* 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, or to taste
* 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
* 1 cup light cream
* 1 cup whole milk

PREPARATION:
Remove the seeds from the durian. Use an electric mixer to mix the flesh into a paste. Press the paste through a fine sieve. You should have 4 ounces durian paste at this point. (If not, use more durian).

In a medium bowl, whisk the eggs with the vanilla essence and sugar.

Bring the milk and cream to a near boil over medium heat. Reduce the heat to low. Pour in the egg mixture, stirring constantly to thicken. Take care not to let the mixture boil, or the milk will curdle (if you see bubbles forming at the edge of the saucepan, take it off the stove element).

Allow the custard to cool. Chill the custard in the freezer for 30 to 45 minutes, until it is just beginning to harden. Gradually stir in the durian paste, a tablespoon at a time.

Either continue freezing, stirring several times throughout, or finish the ice cream in an ice cream maker.

Lets make some Durian ice cream.

I miss eating Mangosteen.

Welcome jason76! Please catch us a kangaroo. I've never had roo satay before.
And Mabuhay sango27!

Let's learn a bit more about ASEAN currencies:

Brunei : Dollar
Cambodia: Riel
Indonesia: Rupiah
Laos: Kip
Malaysia: Ringgit
Myanmar: Kyat
Philippines: Peso
Singapore: Dollar
Thailand: Baht
VietNam: Dong

May we all have plenty of in the future. kaching.gif
sweetntwisted
^hey whats the second highest currency after dollar?
malaccan
^Iono sweet. icon_redface.gif Economics is not my forte. Do you mean in terms of strength or actual value of currency?

But if you wanna take into consideration purchasing power parity, many of ASEAN's currency are undervalued. I think this is what it means anyway. Sorry, no comparison for the kyat.

count me in for this clan lolz
