IniTiaL V.
i play soccer right, and this season im playing in the all age division and there's another team that's from the same club as that is also playing in all age . my coach told us that we will be versing them on sunday and said that they were all indians. so i said "ha, team india. who's in their team?" and my indonesian teammate said "yeah krish, who's in it?" krish gets all offended and said "aye! im fijian, not indian" im thinkin..shiit this guy just denounced his indian heritage. he clearly looks like an indian (im assuming indians migrated to fiji there)

there was another incident when my friend asked an indian looking person wat nationality he was and he said he was fijian too. i also went to his house and they ate indian food and there was another time where he didn't go to school because there was a religious ceremony (and there were no indians on that day too) HMMM....

and there was one more incident when i was sitting down in the train and i overheard a conversation with an indian guy and girl

girl- "hey! im tongan"
guy- "arent u indian?"
girl- "my mums half tongan"

WTF?! ur mums half tongan so that means ur 3/4's indian, ur more indian than u r tongan.

what's up with this? or r there just one off incidents?

@ Initial V:

i dunno man. it depends what context the term 'Indian' or 'Fijian' was supposed to denote. it could mean:
a) a person's Nationality (eg: holding a Fijian passport)
b) a person's direct origin (eg: great-grandparents from India, moved to Kenya for 2 generation, now lives in UK)
- so possibly the person is Kenyan origin??
c) a person's Race/Ethnicity or Heritage

it could be that this Krish friend of yours was talking about (a) or (b). nothing wrong with that IMO. but if u ask him whether he is ethnic/racially Indian, and he still answers: "no, im fijian". then he's an Idiot IMO.

Same here, I think yours is just an isolated heritage. All the Indians I've met in Houston, Texas, U.S.A at least are VERY, EXTREMELY proud of their heritage and there's all these Indian and Hindu associations all around.

All fijians say they are fijians because that's what they are! Guyanese, Trinidadian, Surinamese of indian descent all call themselves guyanese/trini/surinamese too.

I've heard the Fijian gov't discriminates against people with ancestors from India.

Yeah, same thing with Mauritians of Indian descent. I don't think it's an issue of being ashamed...You're just more akin to where your family has been living for so long.....

Even when it comes to the states in India, people willl call themselves Guju or Tamil just b/c they lived there for generations, but their roots belong to some other state......

I think the Indian-Fijian fellow has every right to call himself a Fijian. sure.gif

Let's put it this way: Have you ever heard a white American calling himself an English or Irish or Italian. No! He's an American. It's not that he's ashamed of his heritage. But to him, his nationality is more important than his ethnicity. But of course that isn't the case with everyone.

LOLz..I have this friend of mine who is a Canadian by nationality but she keeps saying to everyone that she's Indian. And to me..she doesn't look like an Indian at all cuz her dad is actually half Indian and half Russian. Not to mention her mum who is fully Russian.
