Why God Descends A Lot Of Chinese In This World?
As I know, Chinese is the only race not to mind to change their chinese name.
You see, so many chinese adopted English name.
Why? Is it hard to be pronounced by foreigners? Or shame to be Chinese.
The Korean, don't adopt English names, their names are also as hard to be pronounced.
The Japanese will never ever change their name. They are proud to be Japanese.
I think, Chinese are the least to be proud to be Chinese.
You see, Almost all, Chinese Singaporean, Malaysian, HongKong adopt English name.
Their reason is their country used to be under British and they are English educated.
How about Taiwan? Oh! They envy America very much.
And How about China? Why they also want to adopt English name?
I don't think, it is neccesary because
China is a well respected country now and also
Chinese has old and rich culture than any other races.
I urge all Chinese to use their original names
.

and beside that....
I always have hard time, to look for them when I ask for them at Hotel receptionist.
They were introduced to me using their English names, but
they check-in into hotel based on their passport names.

I met a man from New Zealand and he married a Chinese woman from China.
He said, his wife also adopted an English name and he said, it's so stupid.
He even said, his wife sometime even forgot her newly adopted English name when she was called in her English name by somebody esle. He called his wife using her Chinese name.
He even told me, alot of Chinese in China still can't speak English but they have English name.

See! How many Chinese become English, without the effort of God.
Or Chinese China still don't beleive in God?

I think you are taking up Canadian space.
Why you migrate to Canada? Because when HongKong wanted to be returned to China?

I don't wanna spoil the fun but..

I had an English name when I started to learn English in class, most students find it cool to have an English name and all, and it doesn't really mean you just give away your name to the English one, it's like an ID no big deal, for we can better communicate in an international community and all. It's like why don't you use your personal name for your ID on this forum?

I had a French name when I started to learn French for the same reason, and that's it, I seldom even use it not even my ID on AF has anything to do with my name, it's like an ID used in a certain environment.

I use my passport name whenever I need to fill up a document, hotel reservation, whatever. I don't see a problem with adopting foreign names, afterall it's just a callsign.

Most Chinese in China don't know English. Therefore, they don't use English name. Only oversea Chinese use English/Spanish/whatever names because they want to adopt to other cultures since they are no longer in China anymore. Chinese don't believe in God. They think all gods are fictional. They think even Bible is
children imaginary book. However they are into worshipping their ancestry and sages such as Confusius, Lao Tsz and now Mao.

Where were you before you became a CHINESE CANADIAN?
Do you live in ChinaTown? That's reason, you still haven't adopted an English name.
Tell you, doesn't matter, how many generations, you live in Canada.
Chinese is always been considered Chinese. You will never been accepted as A CANADIAN. Agreed?
Don't tell me: " I am a Chinese CANADIAN". embarassedlaugh.gif2
Not like European, they can be easily accepted as a Canadian, once they migrate there. Ne?

Now Chinese become a third language in Canada after French and English. In the big cities such as Vancouver, Ontario, etc.. in Canada, you can speak Chinese and have a easy time living there. Actually Canadian Chinese become more and more powerful in Canada as they dominate Canadia economical and politically. The recent election of new president in Canada, Chinese has a strong influence on the votes.

I was answering in response to your question. You asked us why so many chinese canadians or overseas chinese in general tend to adopt english names? And Im just telling you that I never did. I still retained my chinese name that was handed down for centuries Im proud of my heritage and I would never adopt an english name just to be more white! So what exactly are you hounding me for?

I've met Korean and Japanese people who have English names. Most of the people in China do not have an English name. I think you are basing your thoughts on a very small percentage of the Chinese people you've met.

Here're a couple thoughts about the names:
People prefer everyone non-Chinese not to butcher their name.
Some people believe that it's easier to find a job with an English name.
Easier time for other people, which saves them the embarrassment of trying to get your name right.

And for the record, I do not have an English name and I don't live in China town or near one.
Jaimu-Jaimu
Alot of Chinese names are hard to pronounce for non-Asians. Japanese and Korean names are pretty easy to pronounce.

Chinese in China do not adopt an English name, it's completely nonsense. You sure you are talking about Chinese in China?

Even for those Chinese who live in China and have an English name, they do not adopt their English names, they use them only in special locations or in certain occasions maybe in the offices of their foreign invested companies.

That's pretty much I have to say about it.

the hell you talking bout.. all korean/japanese/viet freinds i know have english names. As long as you keep ur original last name.. i dont see the problem

I think the important thing to remember is a name doesn't determine how proud you are of your heritage. I have met asian people with asian names who wouldn't give a rats a** if there country got blown up and I've met people with non asian names who couldn't be more proud of there roots and traditions. This totally depends on the person itself and how they view themselves in society. My english name is Daniel but growing up Ive always insisted that I keep my chinese name too because of the love I have for my culture and my parents so it definitely varies from individual to individual.
n4ce12
What if someone never had a chinese name to begin with...the parents couldnt think of anything worked

I remember my ESL teacher actually made fun of Hong Kong students with English names, calling them not proud of their cultural heritage. I thought she was naive. What's the big fuzz about it? I like the way I had chosen my own name and have two different names I can use in different situations. icon_smile.gif It is convenient and fun, and there is nothing to do with not being proud of being Chinese or whatsoever. icon_smile.gif

New Zealand would be a good example of why Chinese adopt English names. In this country we have a wide mix of races although ethnic Europeans (kiwis) are stil dominant.

English names promote social harmony. The kiwis get along with Chinese with English names far better than Indians with Indian names.

I know ! That means being chinese China is not goog enough yet, without an english name.
Chinese will change anything for money.
The european or japanese or korean native, no need to change their name or adopt english for doing biz with European / foreigneres.
The Korean and Japanese are prouder with their own heritage.
The european that have chinese name, because it's given by their chinese friend. but the chinese adopt it themselves.
For those who live in america , canada or where ever , it's acceptable to have english name.
But not those in China or Taiwan or HongKong.
They were given three words name. But later add an English name... Like Daniel Chan XX XX.
If Chinese are good enough, and if the foreigners want to biz with you.
They will learn, to address you with your chinese name...
Like Chow Yun Fatt, Ang Lee ( 1st Asian to receive an Oscar Award)
Any Japanese or Korean native ( not Japanese or korean American) add an english name in front of their given name... Like Daniel Koichiro Kobayashi or Daniel Kim Il Jong. Have you met one? I haven't !
The Conclusion... Chinese (China) are not good enough to be respected yet.
Come on ! Introduce yourself like your given original chinese name by your parents. What for to have a Yang Ming (englsih name) that your parents don't even know how to pronounce. but try to please the foreigners rather than your own parents.
I am not trying to degrade those that adopt english name.
but I just want you to be proud of being chinese.
