OSAKA -- Grand champion, mongolian yokozuna Asashoryu easily overpowered Roho on Saturday to stay tied for the lead at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

In the day's final bout at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium, the Mongolian yokozuna quickly secured Roho by the belt and up-ended the Russian komusubi at center ring to improve to 7-0, tied with compatriot Hakuho.

Asashoryu is the sole grand champion competing in sumo. He won all six tournaments last year but missed out on the Emperor's Cup at the New Year tourney.

Mongolian, Sekiwake Hakuho, who is gunning for promotion to ozeki, stayed tied for the lead at 7-0 after deflecting a series of arm thrusts from Kokkai and pushing out the Georgia-born maegashira.

The win puts Hakuho well on his way to securing the 13 wins he would need to move up the ranks. Kokkai dropped to 2-5.

Sekiwake Kotomitsuki stayed one win off the pace at 6-1 when he got both arms around Hokutoriki and drove the maegashira out to his third loss of the tournament.

Ozeki Kotooshu fought back to victory -- after being pushed to the straw ridge by Dejima, he grabbed his opponent for a left-handed arm thrown to the dirt. The Bulgarian picked up his fifth win against a pair of losses, while Dejima fell to 4-3.

In one of the day's upsets, ozeki Tochiazuma, who won the New Year tourney, was thrown off balance by a flurry of arm thrusts to the neck by komusubi and quickly dumped to the ground.

The loss ups the pressure on Tochiazuma, who dropped to 5-2 and needs least 12 wins to be considered for sumo's top rank.

Miyabiyama improved to 3-4.

Fellow ozeki Chiyotaikai also fell to two wins off the pace after putting up little resistance to Tamanoshima. The No. 1 maegashira drove his rival to the ring's edge and then side-stepped a counter attack to let Chiyotaikai fall off balance.

Tamanoshima booked only his second win of the tourney, while the Chiyotaikai dropped to 5-2.

In other action, ozeki Kaio rebounded from three straight losses after whipping Iwakiyama to the ground with a powerful right arm throw. Kaio needs a winning record to keep his ozeki status, and bettered his lot to 3-4. The No. 3 maegashira fell to 1-6. (AP)

Wasn't aware Hakuho was a son of a "Grand Champion".

Not sure about him being better than Asashoryu because the yokozuna is only a son of an "Elephant". Mongolian wrestling is way too different from sumo. It's not as retarded as sumo with two pigs trying to push each other out of a box smaller than even one of them.

On a slightly other note, aren't elephants bigger than anything live on earth? confused.gif

Hakuho is 192cm tall, weighing at 152 kg, whereas Asashoryu's measures are 184cm and 146kg. He's definitely bigger than the yokozuna, if he's not smarter. I wonder if sumo takes a lot of brain though.

It's a close call anyway.

U should respect sumo, Subedey. It's now almost one of Mongolian sports, not Japanese since the Mongolians ruling there and will rule for a decade again beerchug.gif
Sumo needs some brain for sure, pay attention to sumo tournaments OK? biggthumpup.gif

Anyway, Hakuho faced his first loss today. Now Asashoryu and Hakuho are leading this bashyo together with 11 wins.
Asashoryu will win again this time!

So I tried to become a good Mongolian and did my homework. It's up for anyone to correct, given I don't "respect" sumo.

I think Mongolian national wrestling "BOKH" should reformed like Sumo in order to make it professional sport.

Asashoryu defeats Hakuho in playoff to win Spring sumo title

OSAKA -- Yokozuna Asashoryu of Mongolia outlasted compatriot Hakuho in a playoff on Sunday to win the Emperor's Cup on the final day of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Asashoryu finally prevailed when he used an arm throw at the ring's edge to send the determined sekiwake toppling off the raised ring. It was Asashoryu's 16th Emperor's Cup and eighth in the last nine tournaments.

"I didn't win the last tournament so I'm very pleased with today's win," said Asashoryu. "He (Hakuho) is a great rival and has made a lot of progress but I don't want to lose to him."

After Hakuho lost to Kaio earlier, Asashoryu had a chance to win the tournament outright in the final bout at Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium but was upset by ozeki Tochiazuma.

Tochiazuma, who finished at 12-3, overpowered the Mongolian grand champion in the final regulation bout to set up the decisive playoff between Asashoryu and Hakuho, who both finished with 13-2 records.

It was Tochiazuma who put an end to Asashoryu's streak of seven straight titles by winning the Emperor's Cup in the New Year tourney in January.

Earlier, ozeki Kaio put Hakuho's title hopes on hold when he forced the Mongolian sekiwake out to improve to 8-7.

It was a huge win for veteran Kaio, who needed a winning record to maintain his ozeki status. Kaio said earlier in the tournament that he would rather retire than be demoted.

Hakuho, who was gunning for his first title, failed to get a grip of Kaio's belt at the faceoff and never recovered. He dropped to 13-2 but got a second life when Tochiazuma defeated Asashoryu.

It wasn't all bad news for Hakuho. With 13 wins he is virtually assured of promotion to ozeki, the sport's second highest rank.

Mongolian marvels -- Monglian grapplers Ama (left), Hakuho (center) and Kyokushuzan took out the three prizes for the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament at the Osaka Prefectural Gymnasium. (Mainichi)In other major bouts, Mongolian Ama, a No. 2 maegashira, nailed down a winning record when he got a grip on the back of Kotomitsuki's belt and forced the sekiwake out to pick up his eighth win against seven losses. Kotomitsuki also finished at 8-7.

Ozeki Chiyotaikai closed out the tournament on a winning note with an effortless win over fellow ozeki Kotooshu of Bulgaria.

Chiyotaikai, who improved to 9-6, faced little resistance when he shoved Kotooshu out in a matter of seconds after the faceoff. Kotooshu also finished at 9-6 but it wasn't an impressive result for the European wrestler, who looked lackluster in his final two bouts.

Earlier Sunday, Estonian wrestler Baruto defeated Takanowaka to become the first wrestler in 43 years to win the second-tier juryo division title with a perfect record.

Baruto, 21, whose real name is Kaido Hoovelson, closed out his Spring campaign by throwing down Takanowaka for his 15th win.

Baruto is set to win promotion to sumo's elite makuuchi division when the rankings are released for the summer meet in May. Promotion would see him become the fifth European wrestler to compete in sumo's top flight.

No. 7 maegashira Kasugao upended Georgian-born Kokkai to improve to 7-8. Top maegashira Kokkai, who dropped to 5-10 landed awkwardly on his leg and had to be assisted out of the stadium.

Komusubi Miyabiyama closed out the tournament on a winning note when he deployed a series of arm thrusts to the neck to send sixth-ranked maegashira Tokitenku over the straw ridge.

Miyabiyama picked up his 10th win against five losses while Tokitenku dropped to 8-7.

No. 4 maegashira Futeno shoved out Russia Roho for his sixth win against nine losses. Roho was making his debut at komusubi but only managed a record of 4-11. (AP)
