Wow...., this is classic "Clash of Civilizations" speculation.
If you red this book, you may find that Indonesia will play "neutral" country as the legacy of our non-alignment movement back on cold war days.
The alliance will be West (USA, Europe, Australia) or Western civilization
vs East (China, North Korea, Iran, Middle East countries) or Sino-Konfucian civilization allied with Islamic civilization.
The main middle player countries that play as buffer and power-balance is India, Indonesia, Brazil, and South Africa, and might be Japan. (if Japan choose to be neutral, but I tend to think Japan will go closer to West.)
Japan will torn apart upon their fear of Chinese growing power and their ties with USA, yet they are part of Eastern Asia Sino-Konfucian sphere of civilization.
While Indonesia as crossroads of world will have unique position between our Islamic majority, yet also serve as diverse and growing democratic country that acomodate many religions and civilizations influences.
India will be courted by West (USA) to be their aliance over their common suspicion and fear of China's growing power, and Islamic Pakistan and Iran.
But I think India and Indonesia will play smart and be neutral.
Brazil will be the main powerhouse of Latin America, While South Africa play major part in Africa. Their influence are expected to be grow in folowing decades.
I think this "Clash of Civilization" thesis somehow shallow, too over generalize, and somehow lack of depth and understanding of the complexity of each country, especially country which has been influenced by so many civilizations such as Indonesia. But it's fun to read though.....
So to answer Jason76 speculations....
