NAGANO -- A police officer who had fallen unconscious after shooting himself on Monday in a lavatory at prefectural police headquarters died on Tuesday at a local hospital, police officials said.
Nagano Prefectural Police declined to identify the 22-year-old officer belonging to the force's riot police squad in consideration of the feelings of his bereaved family.
The incident occurred during his work hours on Monday. The officer was banned from participating in an examination of equipment held at the prefectural police headquarters on Monday morning because he forgot to attach his nameplate to his uniform. As punishment, he was ordered to stand by in a separate room, the officials said.
The officer then went into a lavatory and shot himself to death. He was subsequently found lying in the lavatory, bleeding heavily. A gun was found near him.
