Is Hong Kong a good place to live? I really want to live there but I have no idea if I should?
Can anyone tell me more about HK ,like the transport, money, shops, houses etc...

i've visited HK about 5 times, so i don't have any experiences about living in HK, since i haven't spent more than a month there. but i have this to share:
- you have to know cantonese. HKers suck major @$$ at english.
- HKers are kinda rude, but that's possibly only because i don't know canto. (lol -sigh-)
- getting around HK is surprisingly easy for such a densely populated area. there are a lot of one way roads downtown (both HK island and kowloon) but the taxi drivers know what they're doing and there are taxis EVERYWHERE downtown. other forms of transport are efficient too. the trains and subways are awesome, light buses are cheap and nice, the bigger buses are awesome, trams are nice i suppose... all in all it's a lot easier to get around in HK than most cities its size.
- shopping is amazing in HK. (well i like shopping in manila more but HK is still nice)
- skyline looks awesome.
- housing is really cramped downtown and often pretty stupid. by stupid i'm referring to my grandma's apartment. you have to go out the balcony to get into the guestroom. ugh. architects.

- downtown reeks. lol. especially by the sea. i was standing outside a hotel waiting for a taxi and i smelt stale bread, sewage, the ocean and rotten fruit all at the same time. i almost died. LOL.
- HK's airport is fu-king awesome and easy to get to, but it's biiiiiiiig. >__> so much walking, jesus christ.

Hmm... I couldn't help but post since there's a lot of biased opinions here, okay, I have 2 homes one in the UK and one in HK, I've been living on and off in HK since I was born. So here's a little bit about living in HK.
-Knowing Catonese will get you by, since there's still a lot people in HK who don't really speak English.
-Transport is very efficient and you can get pretty much anywhere in HK via Bus, mini-bus, MTR(Metro), KCR(Train). However, knowing which form of transport to take can be quite hard to figure out exactly. Even when I go clubbing until 4am, I can still catch a night bus back to my home, with most night buses running around every 30mins.
-Contrary to what most people have said here so far, HK ppl aren't actually all that rude, it's just a very closed society. Just be polite yourself and generally people will be polite to you.
-One thing most people don't realise is that HK actually has a tropical climate. In Spring the humidity starts rising along with the temperature. In the Summer, you're expecting an average of 34C with humidity around 80%-95%. So for it can be pretty unbearable if you've never experianced this kind of climate before. However, you are rewarded with a nice mild Autumn and brisk Winter. This is of course if you're from LA, where weather 14C is considered freezing.
-Money, this is a touchy subject, if you're talking about shopping, then you're in for a treat, there are bargins all over the place, just need to shop around. There are like specific places where you can get things (Example: In "Sham Shui Po" District you can find bargin electronics, there's a shopping centre filled with video games stuff and computer stuff). Plus the opening times are great, most shops stay open until around 10pm+. Basically in terms of shopping, you'll never be without shops. Oh yeh, 7-11's are open 24/7 and are everywhere in HK.
-Money, in terms of earning, where this is really subjective, unless you are a skilled indiviual or realllllly lucky, you're not going to be earning much without lots and lots of hard work.
This is all I can think of for now, there's a lot more to tell, but I'm really bad at just writing about things, if you need more info just ask, and I'll do my best to answer.

hongkong people walk damn bloody fast one! i half walk half run also cannot catchup with them. they seem to be always in a rush and talk with a really funny English accent (like singing song) which they actually think it cool hehehehe. they can be pretty rude. in fact helluva rude until they realise that you are not a hongkong chinese but from other country chinese. then they become very nice. personal opinion and experience only. i got lots of good hongkong friends and relatives there.
they kinda live in 'pigeon holes'. really small tiny apartments. if u live in an 500 sq feet apartment, u are considered well to do.
and when a hongki ask u to go over their place around dinner time to give u soup to drink, pls eat ur dinner before going cos they will really ONLY serve u soup.

yeh ditto to what the others said abt knowing canto. it'll make life mch easier in terms of getting around, shopping, and just generally being accepted by the ppl. if you are fluent in canto, mando and english you'll have mad fun.
its a great place for a temporary stay but i dont consider it as a place of permanent residence.
btw, they have a somewhat primitive sewerage system in the suburbs.

I lived in HK for about 10 yrs and Im going to college in U of I now. HK is definately more fun than the US, if you enjoy the city life of shopping, lots of great food, lots of ppl and always rushing to do something.
The first requirement to live in HK is to have lots of $$$ because housing is very expensive, shops are expensive.... If u dont make a good living, then i dont think living in HK will be fun. U will be worried about payin ur bills and stuff all the time. you wont enjoy the place as much as u should. In US, you dont need lots of money to live a relaxing life. A salary of like 50k - 100k a year is good enough to drive luxury cars and have a nice house. In HK thats impossible, you will be riding the MTR subway everyday with that income.
I would suggust living in China though. It has all the same benefits of HK but everythign is cheaper!!
dingdong
Apr 27 2006, 03:05 PM
hk is not expensive if u compare it to uk.
you'll find things so much cheaper coz everything is basically tax free. not sure how much cheaper if u compared it to u s of a but i fink its still cheaper...
i still hate hk tho
most parts > china = dirty

The thing I liked most was the fact that mostly everything was so close to dwellings (arcades, FOOD

Hong kong is a nice place to visit during the winter time. I will not recommend living there.
1. Earning sux, fresh college grad. makes ~10k/month hkd ~1200 USD
2. Long working hrs. usually no OT
3. Weather sux in the summer.. >90F 80+% humunity.
4. Living sux.. houses are small unless you dish out some big $$
5. Not many good looking girls.
6. Girls are gold diggers/high maintence
But.. there is a good side
1. you make what you earn.. No Income tax taken out from your pay check
2. no life insurence to think about
3. you'll be able to find a job because you are from america/speak good english
4. you'll have better chance to find the "better" girls because those girls that went back after gone to school here will not date local guys.
5. Asian over there value friendship alot better then ppl here.
6. the educated/new generation crowd is very polite

Hi, it's Honkie here.
Living in Hong Kong can be expressed in two words:
Convient, Stressful.
It is very conveinent for you to stay in Hogn Kong, whenever where you live, public transportation stops/stations should appear around you. Calling a taxi is also easy as you get a taxi when you wave your hand roadside
However life here could be stressful as the pace in Hnog Kong is very fast, the working time is long, but low salary, students need loads of tutorial classes and exams.
