Hi all,
I grew up in Hawaii (my father is from Illocos Norte and my mother is from the big island of Hawaii) and my wife is from Coronado CA (Irish-German descent). We have a biological daughter who is 8. I've only identified with the Hawaiian culture throughout my life until recently.
We just brought home our new adoptive daughter from Bacolod City, Philippines. Although we had prepared a bit for speaking Tagolog with her (and had been told she would probably have quite a bit of English), she speaks only Ilongo and very little english if at all, and we have no experience with this dialect. She is 4.
We're doing great communicating with her using gestures and simple english, but sometimes, especially when tired or upset, she appears to be asking for something in Ilongo and we don't always intuit what it is. So if we knew some standard phrases she might be using, it would be a big help. Here are some of the phrases we believe we might be hearing:
I have to go...
I'm hungry/thirsty
I'm scared
I would like...
I'm tired/not tired/sleepy/not sleepy
I want my teddy bear
help
If anyone on this forum could help it would be much appreciated.
Aloha,
Noel
