UST basketball player electrocuted to death
A member of the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers was killed after being electrocuted near a swimming pool in a resort in Cagayan, TV Patrol World reported Thursday.
Reports said basketball player John Lee Apil pulled away two of his companions who were electrocuted after leaning on a light post near a swimming pool in Cortes Farm Resort, Barangay Calamagui Solona in Cagayan last Saturday.
While he was able to save the lives of his companions, Apil was unable to save his own.
"Pagkakita ko na tumumba si Ivan.. lumingon ako.. paglingon ko nakita ko na si kuya John Lee.. na-shock ako... kumuha ako ng towel.. pero ng hinawakan ko si John Lee bigla akong nakuryente kaya binitawan ko na (When I saw Ivan fell I glanced and was shocked to see John Lee. I quickly got a towel and tried to save him. But I felt an electric shock when I touched him so I let him go)," said his niece.
Apil's relatives said they will file sue owners of the resort for the boy’s death. They claimed that there was no lifeguard present to ensure the safety of the swimmers.
Resort owner Armando Cortes, however, said they should not be blamed for the younger Apil’s death.
"Matagal na iyang pool na iyan.. wala namang nangyayari.. wala namang nakukuryente... (The pool has been there for a long time and nothing like this ever happened… no one was electrocuted)," he said.
The younger Apil was supposed to play for the Philippine Basketball League this year.
