Had a chat recently with my roomates about punishments at school.........and their names which are kinda funny...
1. Crocodile(Buaya)- u have to crawl on hot cement.
2.Parachute- kinda ridiculous. U have to fly around the field like aeroplanes and jump into mud...apparently..this punishment is done during recess as a form of entertainmant to students.
3. Frog leap(lompat katak)- if u come late to class....u have to jump like a frog to ur class.I dunno, those doing the frog leap always laugh doing it... eventhough it's a punishment
4.Duck walk(jalan itik)- walk like a duck around the school...usually for late arrivals at school.Painful.
5. Psycho- you get yelled by the teacher in front of the assembly.Scary
6. Moustache(Misai)- usually for girls who did not finish their homework, the teacher will draw a 'misai' on their face with a black marker.
7. Marathon- u run 7 times around the field.
8. Gotong-royong- u pick up rubbish around the school.
9. Toilet cleaning(Cuci tandas)- for students caught smoking...since many smokers throw the cigarette packets into the toilet...causing serious plumbing problems and hardship for the 'makcik cleaners'..they have to put their hands into the toilet to retrieve the packets...
10. Train(Ketapi)- mass punishment...students put their hands on the shoulders on the students in front of them and have to walk in a straight inside the dirty and mussy monsoon drains....and do the duck walk when space is tight.
11.The squat(Ketuk-ketampi)- students are to squat and stand repeatedly while holding their ears in front of the assembly or class.....very funny to those watching but humiliating to those doing it.
These are a collection of punishments from the schools my friends and I attend. Any strange punishments u have seen at ur school...please add.

For being talkative, we were made to hold a piece of chalk between our lips.
Do u agree that students shd be punished by teachers in schools?
Nowadays, such a thing is no longer possible in Singapore. Students have taken their teachers to court successfully.. it's quite a big thing.

I dunno...as long the students dun get hurt..it's OK
Most of the punishments I listed are from the boarding schools my roomates attend..I guess these kinda punishments are necessary at such schools to keep students at their place.
National schools in cities usually have light punishments like picking rubbish and stuff...coz the concern parents keep close watch on the schools.....parents of a form 2 classmate of mine actually came to the school to protest coz the Principal, who teach us BM yelled at him.... I mean that's so 'mengada-ngada'.....I supported the Principal.
I believe harsh punishments are typical in rural schools and parents actually welcome it.
Do u know that 20-30 years ago...some parents even give the teachers special canes and tell the teachers to cane their children if they do anything bad at school...

this one sounded so brutal la. i was imagining boiling non-dry cement.
i remember in primary, one teacher used to 'strip' pupils in front of the class for misbehaving, or at least threaten to strip us. come to think of it, this is so very wrong.
another, a teacher uses a rubber band and flicks it hard at the pupils lip, as punishment for being noisy.
in secondary, just the normal rotan on the arse

Helicopter - bend down and put pointing finger on the ground and moves in circle motion.. well the finger will
be your center of the circle..
Starlite - Put pen or spoon or even finger on forehead.. Pull it as far as you can and let it go.. For sure your
forehead will 'lebam'..

I once went to a BTN camp where they made us go through some strange physical manoeuvres.
They make sit in a straight line. Then each of us put our legs on the lap of the person in front of us, and then walk on out hands ..we all have to walk on our hands!!!!. It's kinda funny but then, we had to do it on tarmac......the pain on our hands was excruciating..!!! It was no punishment..just some physical and emotional test.
This could make a nasty mass punishement...the "Ulat Bulu'= Caterpillar.

I've been to school both in Aust and Malaysia,
In Aust the student have much more freedom and the teachers by and large are not allowed to punish the students, as a result the students sometimes get away with atrocious behaviour that would never be tolerated in Malaysian schools.
In Malaysia though, in my school anyway, there were teachers who had a power complex, and abused thier authority over the students. Looking back, it is obvious they were teachers who grossly abused their powers. They used to punish students simply because they didn't like them.

Teachers here maybe more conservative and strict, but from my obdervation and experience, this also create a close bond between students and teachers.
The discipline teacher at my former school eas very fierce like a tiger, everyone flinched when she screams and lecture us loudly during assemblies and she's slapped some boys openly and even had trouble with parents because of her stricy rule and we did not like that too. But during the graduation ceremony, she sincerely apologized and said she was strict because she loved us ...everyone including the boys(and me) cried after hearing her moving speech........the discipline teacher even hugged one of the most notorious student in my school, it was so moving and everyone cried more. Eventhough she was very strict..i will always remembered her as a responsible and a caring teacher......not as a torturer.
Her punishments have virtues lessons..like the boys who are caught smoking in the toilets she told to put their hands into the toilet bowl to retrieve the cigerette packets...she wanted them to feel how the cleaners are having hard a hard time doing the same thing because of their foolish acts.

...but there were assholes in my school who deserved punishements....so I believe students do need to receive punishments in Malaysia...to show them that they can't do whatever they want.
Anyway, punishment at school has been apart of our culture, so we should preserve punishments at school. Maybe we could eliminate harsh punishments that could cause serious physical harm, but we should preserve the;
ketuk ketampi
lompat katak
Misao
Psyco
Ketapi
Helikopter
Gotong Royong
Marathon

Students like all children will need boundaries and like all children they will from time to time push those boundries. There should be someone to decipline them but I do feel that corporal punishment should be banned and teachers should also be made accountable. IMHO.

My friends and I were caught doing vandalisme in school. Eheh. So the dicipline teacher asked us to paint the wall as a punishment, but we must get our own painting stuff. So we had to buy everthing using our own money. When our parents asked us, we just answer them we volunteered to paint the school wall.

I know the punishment doesnt sound nasty or anything. But it was fun.

Corporal punishment is like the death penalty as in its a moral issue, I personally don't believe that physical punishment should be allowed at schools. There are also some people who don't believe that physical punishment should be allowed at home. Me, I feel when you punish a child you need to know why you are doing it, and it shouldn't be just because you're angry.
There are other ways to punish a child ie freedom deprivation. Keep them in at recess, deny them PE, pick up rubbish in the school. Teachers should be allowed to declipline a child it just has to be done appropriately. Teachers also need to realise that they are in a position of power and the student doesn't really have a voice to speak out

My roomates also told their horror stories about ragging during their first weeks at boarding school.
They have to wash senior clothes, take water from them, wash the toilets and even do some silly stunts.
My roomate was punched just because he forgot to reply the salam of one of the seniors.
My roomates say most of the seniors did participate in the ragging, only the few arseholes. But those senior are punished if reported to the teacher, but they'll retaliate and give u double the agony.

in manipal, there were a lot of ragging cases every time the new batch commences...every 6 months a student die...and i mean it..they DIE
one of the most favourite ragging they are so accustomed to is to jump on the stepping stones near the beach ...the water doesnt look so deep but in fact the water is damn deep and there are stones inside the water
so stupidly these juniors follow them to the beach and did whatever was told and they jump off and die
happens every 6 months...the seniors and whoeveer were involved were sacked but the culture lives on...dont ask me why

Ragging weather light or heavy can be argued as a type of bullying so you could ask is ragging necessary and what does it achieve. IMO I feel that its wrong and should not be allowed. As Yana has described people, even in Malaysia, have died because of it.

I kinda remember Cikgu Amir, a discipline teacher of mine that always bring the rattan rod with him. He will personally deliver a quick caning either on the buttocks or on our hands for any disciplinary lapses imaginable.
