nikujaga, gyoza, tempura, korokke, omuraisu, miso soup, sukiyaki, oden, udon, yakisoba, sukiyaki ?? Wow. What are those things?

They all have other ingredients for the spices and sauces but I'll just list the basics
nikujaga - made from potato and meat fried
gyoza - dumplings filled with meat and vegetables
tempura - vegetables, mushrooms and seafood deepfried in tempura batter
korokke - various fillings, deep fried in breadcrumbs
omuraisu - rice omelette with ketchup
miso soup - miso paste dissolved in hot water with other ingredients e.g. seaweed and tofu
sukiyaki - hot pot dish, meat, vegetables, tofu, mushrooms, noodles
oden - hot pot/stew, uses fish cakes, boiled eggs, yam cakes, radish
udon - thick noodles
yakisoba - fried/deep fried Chinese style noodles with meat and vegetables.

Korokke and omuraisu are western dishes.

not really. they dont eat rice everyday. they like eating curry and they eat lots of noodles as well. they also like eating western foods like cold-cut sandwiches. japanese cuisine is really a mix of a bunch of stuff with japanese characteristics.

They don't eat rice THAT much..but they do eat it...like part of meals I guess...just like many Asians..it depends...some don't eat it at all. I doubt college kids and $hit living abroad in the west eat traditional alot.

I knew a bunch of Japanese kids and they just said Japanese also eat rice alot. embarassedlaugh.gif

If you've been reading the newspaper lately, they just found that fish do infact have a lot of mercury. Tuna has a very high content of mercury so it's not a good idea eating a lot of tuna. From now on every fish the fishermen catch has to get it tested for mercury and over half of their catch is put back into the water or something like that.

Interesting stuff.

gyoza, udon and yakisoba were copied from the Chinese. Even ancient sushi developed from Chinese methods of preserving fish. Most likely from immigrants or merchants who settled in Japanese ports. Tempura was from the Portugese. Every Friday, Catholics don't eat meat. They fry fish.

I wonder how the "real" Japanese cuisine was like before these later influences?

Gyoza and yakisoba are Chinese, whether udon is or not is debateable, some say it was imported from China others say different.

Pretty much most of the other stuff icon_confused.gif
