I love her because, 1st, I have a deep combination with India and she has indian blood in her vein. but moreover the main reason is 2nd, because she loves my country and she said "Vietnam is the only home i have".

And look at this, this is funny and this bashes the anti-VN people in this forum:

Myth #3: Vietnamese people are oppressed/have no freedom

This sentiment is so prevalent here. I've seen bloggers flamed for writing about Vietnam. The comments come from people who surely haven't stepped foot in Vietnam in the last 30 years. Do they have any evidence that the people of Vietnam are living under an "oppressive regime"? No

Damn, she's pretty.

You know you live in Hanoi when...
-your clothes smell like mildew
-Living in 90% humidity year-round means that you feel like a fish out of water when you visit drier places.
-you haven't seen the sun in 3 months
-you've gotten used to being woken up in the middle of the night by the frightening moan of a man singing Karaoke next door.
-You've gotten used to being awoken every morning, even on Sundays, to the bang bang of construction work next door.
-You've gotten used to having ill-mannered neighborhood children peeking in your windows and knocking on your doors, screaming "hello hello, chewing gum?" at all hours of the day.
-You know that a peaceful walk through the city, soaking up the culture and sights, is an impossibility with shoeshine boys and postcard sellers at your heels...even when you tell them in perfect Vietnamese that you are not a tourist and that you've lived in Hanoi for years.
-You know that no matter how long you live in Hanoi, you will always be a foreigner, stared and pointed at with curiosity wherever you go.
--You know that the notion of "tact" varies from culture to culture, so you try not to get too offended when you're told, yet again, how very fat you are.
--You laugh when people say that there isn't a place on earth that hasn't been invaded by McDonald's.
--You have a maid...And her name's probably Mai and she irons and folds your underwear.
--You are no longer surprised when you get charged double what Vietnamese are charged for everything.
--You've tried snake wine, dogmeat or bull's penis at least once.
--Your power goes out for a couple hours a few times a month.
--You know that if you wait for the traffic to clam down before crossing the street you'll never cross the street...the key is to just step out and let all the bikes and motorbikes swerve around you.
--You watched The Quiet American twice just to see the beautiful shots of Hanoi's streets and architecture again.
--You chuckle when you tell people you live in Hanoi and they say, "it must be nice to live in the tropics where it's always sunny and never gets cold."
--You know that when a group of 7 year-olds surrounds you on the street screaming "fu-k you," they're just practicing their English.
--If you live in a Vietnamese style house, you don't need a gym membership because climbing 6 flights of stairs at a 60 degree angle everyday, just to get to your bedroom, is enough of a workout.
--You are a Karaoke expert.
--Apocalypse Now isn't just a movie to you...it's where you spend your weeknights, along with every other expat in Hanoi.

(For old-timers who lived in Hanoi before 1993)
--You remember when the embargo was lifted and suddenly there was food!
--You remember when the only restaurant in town was "A Little Italian"
--You remember when the only hamburger you could find in town was at the Swedish Bar.
--Despite all this, you still love living in Hanoi!

I will add more as I think of them...and try to get other Hanoians to contribute:)

Ha ha, "Despite all this, you still love living in Hanoi!"

Đừng có nghèo mà ham! you've got no chance!

Yes, s-ck her!

But her mother's poem is really something:

(Preya now says "When I find it difficult to express how I feel about Viet Nam, I just reread the words that my mother wrote when she had to leave in 1975").

I did not spring from the soil of Viet Nam.
I was not cradled in her womb
and she did not give birth to me.
I was a child of another color
and I spoke another language
and yet Viet Nam received me
as a mother receives an adopted child from a far-off land.
I went to Viet Nam to give and I received.
I went to teach and four thousand years of history
and wisdom enlightened me.
I went to a country ravaged by war and found peace.
I went expecting to find despair and sorrow
and I found hope and joy.
I crossed an ocean and found a home.
There is a song in my heart called Viet Nam,
but it is wordless and I am incomplete.
The words have gone from my song
and I am as a motherless child.

--Cherie Clark, 1975

Hi Guys,

Thanks for visiting my site. I just wanted to say that I truly love Vietnam. My "you know you live in Hanoi..." post is supposed to be a tongue-in-cheek commentary about living in Hanoi. I lived in Vietnam most of my life, so naturally I have many experiences! Please don't take those as insults:) Vietnam is my home, and if you read my entire blog, you'll know how much I love and miss it.

Once again, thank you for reading my blog, but please don't misconstrue my posts. Also, I posted my mother's poem because I too feel like that way!

That's OK, now we know what you know, that's all!!! embarassedlaugh.gif

Whatever! With a mother like yours, you've got everything forgiven! Please say Hello to her from us, with love. It's very nice to know her...

Anyway, they all found you very pretty -- including I.

Preya, your mom wrote

What about adapting her poem on some music? or does she have a harmony still in her heart?

Please, ask her! kiss.gif

You should try going to Ho Chi Minh City one day. But then again I imagine the South must be a lot more different in terms of environment than the North.

khaviet--thank you:) I love Hanoi in autumn; here's a post I wrote about hoa sua in autumn:

And another about missing Hanoi (scents):

Byron--I've been to Saigon many times, and I even went to school there for a while. It is VERY different, and I don't love it like I love Hanoi, but it's nice in its own way:)

I am obsessed with fragrance. My attachment to places is so often caught up in scents that the two are inseparable in my mind–scent and place. My love for Hanoi is inextricably tied to scent. I remember in scents; I miss in scents.

you are such a sensitive girl. that is lovely and good for you priya, you know the smallest detail of every hanoi corner even a scent.

Hey do you like bún chả? biggrin.gif (you mentioned quán thánh street, it makes me remember bún chả_ eek.gif bawling.gif )

One thing Priya, do you speak Viet well? I think yes?

You love literature, dont you?

Preya,

You lived in VN with your family? So how did your family came to know VN especially your mother? Anyway, I'm happy that you liked VN as much as I do. I missed the cheap food and the whole feeling of being in Vietnam. If you had lived in VN for a few years already, you must be a pro at bargaining eh?

Johann,

Are you half Vietnamese and Indian because your Vietnamese are pretty good, better than most Vietnamese kids over here.

Here
I got here yesterday! I am so excited! Hanoi has changed a lot, but it's still Hanoi. I'm staying at a cute little place in the old quarter, on Hang Mam street. I was too excited to rest yesterday, so my sister-in-law and I went to Au Lac Cafe. It was heaven for me to be back there, to see the Metropole's Christmas lights go on as it turned dark. We then met up with some friends and went to Apocalypse. It was good to see old friends there, but the new location is more like a nightclub and lacks that grimy bar feeling, which some might view as a plus. I had so much fun! I am getting ready to call a taxi to go visit my old school (new campus). Sorry for this poorly written, hasty entry. I will try to write more and add some pictures when I get the chance. For now...just wanted to say that I am really happy to be home!

Oh priya is so lovely. When you go to vietnam you must go over there to my home, my mom and my aunts will love you a lot. look. you love books, you love flowers, you love the delicacy in things. you are a true hanoian dear.
