there are okinawans in Hawaii that refuse to be called 'japanese'.

Never heard of that. Whats the reason for it?

because okinawans had a flourishing culture before japanese warlords took it. a few centuries before the mainland chinese started settling taiwan/formosa.

i don't know about Gackt, but my cousin her father's family is from Korean. She's grown up mostly in our side of the family, but she says her father specifically say she's Okinawan.

well. doesn't mean he cant make the distinction even further. for example, some people call themselves sicilian. they can be both sicilian and italian. if he wanted to also proclaim he was okinawan, hes proclaiming his pride also in okinawa. it doesnt mean he's abandoning his claim to him being japanese as well.

When someone asked him if he was Japanese he'd say I'm Okinawan...........its just stupid, its not like hes not Japanese so the answer to the question is yes. Some people are just like 'No I'm Okinawan' which is even more bloody ridiculous.
