What can I say, I'm new to the game. Still learning. Shooting a bow and shooting a rifle are 2 completely different things. I can shoot 1/4 moa all day with my rifles. I still gotta dial in the sights. I just got new arrows and they fly completely different from those in the picture.

1250 rounds loaded through the Dillan. I give this press an A so far.
Accuracy has not suffered at all.
I have loaded:
185 gr jhp and swc
200 gr JHP and swc
230 gr JHP and round nose.
Powder clays 3.9 grains up to 5 grains.
No misfires as of yet only 2 feed jams. I have found the clays to be much cleaner burning than any of the factory ammo that I have shot thus far.
25 meters I am grouping right at 3 inches give or take a bit. For me these days thats as tight as it gets. my 2.5 inch days are behind me.

AR15 vs AK47

Very detailed comparison of my favorite weapons. The best thing about it is its non biased.
sks88
Ar vs Ak? Hmm..well..both are incredible designs to begin with, although i would say the ak 47 is still more superior to the ar. If you look back on history...many can say that the ak 47 used in the Vietnam war out classed the m16(almost same platform with ar..both blk rifles)speaking on terms of reliability. To me..the design of the ak 47 was built like a tank(its not the prettiest lolz)..but able to withstand almost anything (dirt, abuse, heat, desert, winter) etc, while the blk rifle..suffered because of lack of cleaning it would jam (also if you dont lube the bolt..shyt will misfeed etc). The positive aspects of the ar though is that its wayyy more accurate then the ak 47 IMO. Ak 47's just like sks's to me are pretty accurate to only 150-200 yard on out..anything further using iron sights you better be a skilled marksman to hit shyt or have a great scope haha, to which where the ar platform..the 223 caliber is more accurate then 7x62 x 39 round..therefore adding to the Ar's accuracy capability. eh..im pretty sure others will have better explanations..but these are just my views. Ak 47 without a doubt is better, more reliable, cheaper to make, and can just about take anything you throw at it..if you run over it with a tank haha.

I own an HK-91 so I guess you can say that is my favorite. AR 10's are nice because they are .308 cal. I don't like the .223 or 5.56 for anything but plinking so I give the AK the advantage over the ar-15.

That is me earlier this month when it was warm enough not to need gloves. That day was one of the few chances I have to break in the new Steyr M-40. Still needs about a couple more hundreds rounds to go. The gun felt very comfortable in my hands, either weak or strong, but I was shooting slightly lower left. One of our crew that day had his XD-45 and I noticed that his 45's recoil were limited to my wrists while my 40's recoil were felt and acted all the way back to my elbows. With my 40, my forearm was in motion but with his 45 only my wrist moved. There were no doubt the 45's recoil were noticeably stronger. If it was not for the 45's larger grip, I would have had tighter groupings because I could recover faster. With the XD-45, every time I release and re-grip, I lose the front sight and my shots would end up in the dirt. With my friend shooting my Steyr, it was the opposite and many of his shots were wild enough to go over that rise in the back, which was the road...Yikes...!! Anyway, I was shooting 155gr American and later 165gr Win. so may be I will try a heavier load like 180 the next time. My friend reported no difference in recoil behavior but then he is a beefy fat slob anyway.

I have also shot a few .40's and noticed a different feel in the recoil. I am a 1911 man so my views I admit are biased. My neighbor bought a RIA Rock island Armory 1911 mil spec. Nice gun in the hand and shot ok considering the cost. $385.00. It has fixed sights and not very good ones at that but it shoots straight and true. Not in the league of my Dan wesson but it will clear the door in the event of an intruder.

Go to a store and handle a weapon to find out what's comfortable for you. Simple semiauto handgun for under 1k??? $hit son, you can get some great hand guns for under 1k lol. H&K's, Springfield XD, Glocks, Smith and Wesson, Sigs, it's all on your preference. Go handle one of those brands and find the most comfortable one for you. I love my HK USP 45, but man, after I bought my Kimber CDPII .45, I don't touch the HK anymore lol.

it really depends on your preference. Also, how you want to carry on a everyday basis. When you get a firearm as a ccw...it changes the way you live more then you think, with what you wear, how you sit, etc.

Many people argue which is better...pistol or revolver? but me i think there is nothing wrong with the simple design of the revolver..therefore thats what i carry.

here are a few popular choices below, you also have to consider what caliber your looking for.

ruger lcp 380. Very popular for women..or as a back up carry gun. People like it because its compact...and it hlds i believe 7 rounds in mag, 1 in the chamber but the round is small...basically meaning its a piss round

Glock either in 9mm or 40 cal. People love glocks, there expensive and ugly..but you can rely on it with your life because they are dependable, rugged, Only negative thing is the safety...there is no safety bar...the safety is YOU keeping your finger off the trigger esp if theres one in the chamber

Taurus 9mm.. People buy taurus because the of the lifetime warranty, whatever breaks you can send it to them and theyll fix it, also there guns are cheap 300-500

Ruger sp101 is what i carry Revolvers are great, simple, dont need much maintenance. Only thing is, you have 5-6 shots..so u better go to the range and PRACTICE PRACTICE because when the shots count...thats all u have.

Hope this helps.

First of all what doyou intend to use the gun for? Personal defence or target shooting? This matters... If its primary purpose is target shooting perhaps you should select a ruger 22 cal semi auto. Excellent to learn on, cheap to shoot, and cost less than $300.00
If its a combination target shooting/ pesonal defence? Go with a 1911 mod. 45 acp. Prices range from 275- well over 3 grand. Why a 1911? Well for 250.00 you can buy a conversion kit and still shoot 22 cals for building techique. 3 minute change over back to 45 acp of man stopping fire power.
First gun don't break the bank. You might hate the sport. A midlevel 1911 will start at $550.00. Springfield Military spec.. Or for less a Rock Island armory military spec 285.00

2nd2none, sks88 and tinman01,

Thanks for the advice guys. Your insight is pretty amazing.

Over the years I've thought about getting a handgun, but didn't get around to it. What's motivating me to move on it now is the likelihood that it's going to become harder to get a gun, ammo, and related equipment. There will probably be restrictions and taxes imposed under California and/or federal law in the coming years. So it's now or never.

Target practice seems like an interesting sport, but my use for the handgun would be personal defense. I need to get the feel of different guns, learn about the models, and make a decision about what to buy. Then it will be time to practice and become modestly proficient. I'll be asking more questions as time goes by. Thanks again.

Its no secret that I prefer a 1911 mod in 45acp. BUT it takes a little getting used to. The recoil although not all that bad has intimidated more than a few people. No matter what gun/caliber you select need to hit the shooting rang often. You need to become very familiar with your weapon. It can be dangerous to you if you don't. Imagine having to look for the safety while facing an intruder..
As a combat vet I can tell you that would end bad for you. Another cal less popular here in the states but very effective is the super .38. It has a more forgiving recoil than the .45 acp but more stopping power than a 9mm.
Baal I wish you luck. Check out the highroad.com...

Welcome to the club baal,

Now its all about personal preference. What you think looks nice, what specifications such as round capacity, caliber, weight and the most important grip because how it feels in your hands plays a major role in accuracy. For under a $1000, you can buy a decently accurate and reliable pistol, extra magazines, ammo and a self defense class. I can name many pistol companies but Im honestly biased. I suggest you go to a gun range/store and get a feel for what you want. You can even rent the pistol under supervision and get some tips. I strongly urge new shooters to take classes, you learn allot and you get over the actual fear of shooting. And as much as us gun guys like to act tough. There was a point where we all flinched like a girl. embarassedlaugh.gif

But personally, my favorite pistol of all time is the SIG. But they are expensive. The best bang for your buck in my honest opinion is a Glock. Make some time and head to the range and let us know what you decide. Dont procrastinate, they might ban everything tomorrow icon_neutral.gif .

When it does collapses its not going to be a bunch of guys running around with rifles. Its going to be like Katrina. Cops going door to door searching around for guns. Check points with military asking and interrogating if you have any firearms in your vehicle, and if you do you will be detained and your firearms confiscated. Civil unrest is not really fun at all. And as much as a pistol is under powered. Its all we really have.

Hi Guys,

Both of my sons are urging me to get a handgun soon. My younger son and I are getting together this weekend to visit some gun shops. I've heard really good things about the Glock 9mm, but I've never even held one. The lack of a safety bar sort of worries me. We'll see.

I have kind of a bad feeling about the way things are going in California. There seems to be a disconnect between the people and the govt., and high anxiety among many ordinary people. I am apprehensive that the State of California will impose a level of taxation on guns and ammo, and regulatory restrictions that will be a back door method of prohibiting gun sales.

I get the message that when you need a handgun the next worse thing to not having one is not knowing how to use it. I'll have to find a range.

The lack of safety in the glock is actually a real valid reason of concern. They openly advertise that they have a safety, but its really in the context of dropping the pistol accidentally, Its all about trigger control. Something that you would learn as a natural reflex once you invest in a full blown pistol course. And if you invest in a quality holster its virtually a non issue. Its all about how much you are willing to train with your pistol baal. But if its a big enough issue for you there are a number of high quality pistols that have a external safety.

California has the most strictest gun control out of all the states. And we both know how highly ineffective that turned out (SF,RICHMOND,OAKLAND, STOCKTON, FRESNO, and LA). Even if you buy a glock 9mm, you are only restricted to 10 rounds. While the criminals most likely have 15-17 rounds in that same model of pistol. I hate to say it, but as someone that is probably half your age. You should of took advandatge when the laws in this state werent as strict. We have feinstein to thank for this but thats a whole different topic.

Civil unrest was a topic that was laughed at. People that were concerned with it were ridiculed and branded paranoid. But these days its actually a real concern. You should really step up and prepare for it. icon_neutral.gif

sks88
Leos love glocks so do militay personel...but their not for everyone because of it's dreaded
Design of the finger handgrips...me personally it don't fit my hands right. I hope your shopping turns out
Well man, you seem you'll be a very mature/responsible gunowner.
tinman01
Well if civil unrest happens this tinman is ready. Lets hope it never comes to that.
Baal finding a gunshop your comfortable with is also important. That gunshop will direct you to a good range and steer you towards the right gun for you. After all its your return business they want not that 1 time sale. You will find that within the gun community there are many many folks who are willing to mentor you.
The Glock. No denying Glocks extreme reliability. But its accuracy?? It will clear the door if the bad guy is standing in it.. For pure defence it is a good weapon. But remember. You make actually enjoy target shooting. Buying amore accurate weapon for about the same money is a 2 for win deal.
Check out whats out there and talk to a few gun dealers.
Also there are some really good gun web sights that will give you the straight poop on any gun you want to buy.

Yah, you have to take the handgun safety course unless you are active/reserve/retired military or LEO. Good to hear you found a gun that's comfortable for you. I think that's the most important thing when looking at guns. Most people don't realize this task, they simply buy the gun because they think it's cool and then wonder why they suck at the range. Para 1911 isn't a bad choice at all. Are you getting a fullsize, subcompact, or compact? Also, do you plan on doing any mods to this pistol? If so, you should be alright if you're getting a 1911. Most 1911 parts are interchangeable between brands. I have a Kimber CDP II .45, it's pretty much a 1911, it came with match grade barrel, trigger, sights, it's just pure sex lol. Take your time choosing something that's right for you. Enjoy your new addiction icon_smile.gif.

Enjoy your new addiction icon_smile.gif.

lol, fun fun fun! I haven't been at the range for awhile, I'm going back in the weeks to come to zero in my rifle for my hunt on easter weekend hehe. I've been neglecting my rifles since I got into archery hunting lol. Rifles, pistols, bows, cars, ugh, what expensive hobbies...

Nice pistola my friend. This is my shooter.
